There are multiple Batmen running around and the Gotham supporting cast all get some good page time here. There were two character developments that felt forced. First, Nightwing has become dark and distant. It just feels very rushed. Wouldn’t have been easier to play this out instead of just being told it? Second, Damian has turned into a reckless child. It really just sets up the C list characters for the events in Battle for the Cowl. We wont know if this thing is even relevant until the end of the event. I liked it but I probably could have done fine without it. One thing this comic did well was establish Vicki Vale immediately as a player in Bruce Wayne’s life. This issue really is a bit of a preview issue involving some fringe characters in Gotham. In some ways, you can see the direct connections to some of the coming series, like Azrael. The issue is pretty good but we won’t really know how good it is until we see these characters rooted in the event. At this point it’s probably for the completists for the event only. The two stories about Vicki Vale and Leslie Thompkins are interesting because I can’t remember the last time either one was a relevant fixture in a Batman series. I thought this was a good vehicle back into the fold quickly and not forcefully.   [read the full post]

Catwoman slips free from the cuffs. Catwoman says that her parents were killed, too. Catwoman says that Batman is not alone. Catwoman then disappears. Batman just stands there. The first story would be the "death" of the Golden Age Batman. The second story would be the death of the Silver Age Batman. This could be the metaphysical interpretation of how DC "killed" the Golden Age Batman to give us a much different Silver Age Batman. And then years down the road, DC "killed" the Silver Age Batman to give us the much different post-1986 version of Batman.   [read the full post]
