Rate Trade Perspectives: Crossover Comparison - Final Crisis vs. Blackest Night collection

Original at Collected Editions external link    Wed, Nov 11

By collectededitions(noreply@blogger.com) As I mentioned, Final Crisis has a lot of "fallout" -- that is, not monthly titles that cross over into the main event as with Infinite Crisis and Blackest Night -- but rather its effects are felt later in Teen Titans, Robin, Nightwing, and the like, and you get a complete story even if you onl...

By noreply@blogger.com (Caleb) Alternately, I wonder if this might have sold better if it was just branded as a Batman book or a JLA book. Batman is the main character, and there are just about enough Leaguers to hold up the weight of JLA branding (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Nightwing and Jason Blood/The...

By Babs If you have been reading the series since 'Battle For The Cowl' then you are probably familiar with the quasi fall-out between Tim Drake (former Robin,) and Dick Grayson (former Nightwing). By noreply@blogger.com (Andrenn) Tomasi had a well received run on Nightwing and it shows that he has a great grasp on the Batman family, especially Dick who he shows both as an individual and with his time now as Batman. He’s not going to try and make Dick act like Bruce or have him go for the silent dark knight. He’s going for the s...

By legacysword@gmail.com (Kevin) I also like how Winnick has written Two-Face in this arc. It sort of feels like a continuation of the Nightwing vs. Two-Face storyline we got at the end of the Nightwing series. Winnick has done a nice job building Two-Face into being Dick's version of Joker as he takes up the mantle of Batman. It i...

By noreply@blogger.com (Tom Bondurant) Memorable milestones make the Batman timeline is relatively easy to figure. Bruce Wayne was 25 during "Batman: Year One," Dick Grayson became Robin somewhere in Year Three and turned 20 not long after becoming Nightwing, and Tim Drake was 13 when he became Robin. (By the way, has "Batman: Y...

By brucecastle Nightwing sees “Too Late” and the bat symbol on fire. Oh, how I love that trick. I would rather see Jason Todd taking the time to write out those words and the bat symbol, using gasoline. How can he write so legibly? What a waste of time, just to make one panel look “cool.”

By ComicList This comic has an awful lot going on and it feels like it is including characters simply to make it more epic without really wanting to use them. The story is so much better when it stays focused on Batman versus Batman versus Nightwing. The subplot with the villains feels half baked and comes across as just a set up for a future arc. The easy thing to do is to compare this to Knightfall, but in that series Bruce wasn’t dead and it presumed he was coming back. Here, we don’t know the story with Bruce and the characterizations are being put on steroids to force the confrontation while Knightfall had months to grow them. The comic presents an interesting showdown at two points in the comic that save it from being mediocre. The art is very good and helps the is...   [read the full post]

By ComicList There is a lot to get into for this series. Two-Face and the Penguin are having a turf war while a third player is blackmailing the rest of the villains to fight on one side. There are multiple Batmen running around and the Gotham supporting cast all get some good page time here. There were two character developments that felt forced. First, Nightwing has become dark and distant. It just feels very rushed. Wouldn’t have been easier to play this out instead of just being told it? Second, Damian has turned into a reckless child. He isn’t the fighting brat with a massive ego anymore. That’s fine, but are we expected to believe that Oracle, Dick and Tim are all okay with him hanging around like nothing happened? We’ll have to see how this all plays out but bas...   [read the full post]

By noreply@blogger.com (Rokk Krinn) Writer: Grant Morrison We shift to Dick in his Nightwing costume and stating that he is going to be on his own with the Teen Titans. We cut to Bruce telling Alfred how time has flown by. Bruce stares at the display case with the Robin outfit in it. Bruce tells Alfred to say goodbye to the Batcave. That it is now just Bruce, Alfred and Gotham City. The Silver Age love interest is none other than the real Kathy Kane also known as Batwoman. Kathy Kane first appeared in Detective Comics #233 in 1956. Batwoman was then killed in Detective Comics #485. DC then retroactively erased Batwoman from Batman’s continuity via Crisis on Infinite Earths.   [read the full post]
