At Comic Con this past year “Bones” producer Hart Hansen posed a question to the crowd asking who wanted Bones and Booth to get together? My Dad clapped in agreement, I did not. Neither did ½ of the audience. Hart’s question illustrated his conundrum with developing the series, ½ of his viewers watch for the shipping angle and the other ½ could care less if Bones and Brennan ever get together or not.

Last night’s season premiere episode “Harbringers in the Fountain” picked up six weeks after Booth woke up from his surgery and had a problem distinguishing reality from fiction and was trying to figure out his true feelings for Tempy.

At the center of the episode guest star Cyndi Lauper came on as a psychic who told Brennan where she could locate some bodies.  Newly reinstated Booth spends much of the episode trying to get back into his old skin and oftentimes failing, like forgetting to stick it to the man by wearing goofy socks or that he hates clowns. Brennan was her emotionally detached self and spent the entire episode arguing with everyone over the merits of the psychics abilities. She also spent much of the episode correcting Booth on the things that he was doing that were very ‘un-Booth-like.”

Overall the episode felt very uneven. We didn’t start w/ a gooey pile of bones that we’re used to expecting at the beginning of the episode and the full on science of the episode was pushed  to the back burner in favor of the exploration of the shipping angle on the show. There was also quite a lot of repetitive storytelling in the episode. Did we really have to endure not just Camille telling Booth that he shouldn’t tell Tempy his feelings but then have Sweets tell him the exact same thing several scenes later? Poor Hodgins happy declaration that he was king of the lab fell flat since so little time was actually spent in the lab. Throughout the episode we were mostly shown the science unfolding on the show instead of having it all explained to us. Brennan had very little hands on work in solving the case from the science end, which again left the episode feeling unbalanced. Here’s hoping that we’ll get Zack’s permanent replacement soon to bring that dynamic back in full force.

In the end Booth wussed out and didn’t tell Brennan how he was really feeling which gives me hope that we won’t have to suffer through another touchy feely episode like this one again. The bright spot of the entire episode was Cyndi Lauper’s brilliant performance. She truly shined as the flaky and believable psychic. Hopefully our chances will be good and she’ll be brought back at another time.
