Burn Notice Questions and Answers Review Season 3 Episode 2 — Questions and Answers Written by Alfredo Barrios, Jr. and directed by John Kretchmer. Interesting fact about Mr. Kretchmer, he’s directed the most BN episodes so far and he has also directed shows such as: Veronica Mars, Charmed, Hercules, Buffy, Xena and even an episode of Lois and Clark. His body of work is very impressive. Tonight’s episode opens with Michael working out and recharging because ‘you never know what’s just around the corner.’ Good thinking for a burned operative with absolutely no support. Fi has found work rounding up perps for a bail bondsman. And we are introduced to Detective Paxson of the Miami PD played by Moon Bloodgood (recently seen in the movie, Terminator Salvation). Apparently this detective has it in for Michael because he was seen leaving a number of blown up and totaled cars in the street. Okaaay. Townie cops are going after a guy because he no longer has an agency cleanup crew? I’ll roll with it since she just got introduced. We knew that Michael would be a target for many walks of life, but a townie cop??? I’m sticking with it – this show hasn’t disappointed yet and hopefully Paxson’s story arc will be an interesting one. So Paxson tosses Michael into the cruiser along with the ‘fugitive’ that Fi doesn’t have a bail enforcement license to apprehend. Then she declares herself Michael’s worst nightmare. (Is it wrong of me to miss Carla?) Fi bails out Michael, who has spent some of his incarceration in the drunk tank. Interesting choice. He promises to make up for her loss of income by helping her with a case for a sister of a former bail jumper. This woman hasn’t been able to contact her son for three days. He’s visiting his father. Sam arrives. Yea! He’s smitten with his new woman who can handle a set . . . of tools. He has info on Michael’s stalker detective. She has video of him going into a storage complex where he has some C4 and detonators. Oops. So Michael is going to have to get his stash before Paxson gets a warrant to present evidence at his hearing. (What was he charged with? Not sure) Fi is constantly trying to drag him away from Sam. So Michael, Fi and their client show up at her ex’s house where the kid is supposed to be. In the Charger. Yea! Mom is calling on his cellphone. So he stays outside while the women go for the door. Apparently it’s his birthday and his mom wants to celebrate, not the usual thing that goes on in his family. Howard, the ex, sneaks out the back of the house while Fi knocks and yells on his front door. Michael and Charger chase him down and finally get him to stop. Howard confesses that his son has been kidnapped. No ransom, just information regarding his place of employment, a diamond wholesaler. Brandon, the son, is too old to not identify his kidnappers. So Howard and Patricia, the parents are now the clients. Howard, per Michael’s instruction, sets up a one on one with the kidnappers. Fi has some questionable relaxation techniques on stakeout. [big grin] Santora the kidnapper throws a few punches Howard’s way. He’s checking to see if they’re alone. Howard is a real man and a real dad. He plays it perfectly. Santora leaves with Sam following. Heroes are often inspired and encouraged by the actions of everyday people like Howard. Our first impression of him was that he was a lousy guy who wanted to take their son away from his mother – now he proves to be heroic in regaining his son from the baddies. Talk about character growth! Michael’s with worried Patricia. Sam arrives to inform them the guy is nowhere near the kid and is in a bar sipping mojitos. Y’know we probably should invent a shot game where every time Sam says mojito we have to take a drink. All that oxygen, all that alcohol. Would we even finish an episode? So Sam and Michael introduce us and Patricia to reverse interrogation. One thing I love about the BN operative premise is . . . there’s theater, lots of theater – using real life situations of ‘live or die.’ Stakes are high and so is the action and drama. Michael and Fi go to where the C4 is stored. Even something as mundane as this is an opportunity to be informed about what to look for and what not to do. So Paxson and her partner show up before the storage unit is opened. Michael hands her some breakfast receipts and she leaves them with a smiling warning. So what are the charges? Terrorist? Menace? Wrecker of 4 wheeled vehicles for $100, Alex? Sam calls Michael. He’s ready to stage the reverse interrogation. Sam aka Chuck Finley Yea! is a bad cop and pulls over Santora. He tells the kidnapper that there’s this guy who is trying to muscle in on his diamond job. He knows this because he’s captured his favorite snitch who gave him the info. Madeline finds out from Fi that Michael is going to miss his own birthday party. Best line of the night: “Loving Michael is always trench warfare.” Sam and Santora go to an abandoned warehouse to ‘interrogate’ the snitch aka Michael alias Shep the drug addict. Good setup on how the questioning may take a turn for the worst. Loved Michael’s alter ego in this episode. You could really see him playing Santora. Sam leaves them alone to call Fi with some info. They still aren’t playing nice. Santora pulls a knife and Michael has to scream his way out of being Reservoir Dog’d. So Sam arrives pulling an Indy. (you pull a knife, I’ll pull a gun.) Fi at Michael’s packs her arsenal and gives couple’s advice to Howard and Patricia after Howard volunteers to die for his son. Back at the warehouse, Santora still gets a few lucky punches in despite Sam having a gun. They get Santora to tell them where he is hiding the kid. Fi and Jimmy, Santora’s guy, have cased a diner that Shep mentioned. Fi shows us the art of tailing and when to quit. She sends Sam an IM pic of Jimmy with a text message. Santora has had enough of the interrogation – which could mean Michael’s demise. So Sam and Michael silently signal each other. Sam tells Santora, Shep’s guy could be one of Santora’s flunkies. Sam stands behind Santora giving Michael signals about Jimmy’s pic. Brilliant! Santora wants Shep and the kid dead. Sam volunteers to kill Shep/Michael. Watching Jeffrey Donovan work his craft is pure pleasure. Yea! So Sam and Santora go after Shep because he has Chuck’s gun. (keep up with the aliases) And also, so Sam can get a location on the kid to give to Michael. Sam calls Michael; Michael calls Fi – all while they are driving to the location. Lots of movement and action. Good scoring by John Dickson. We learn the tactical importance of tv in urban warfare. Good to know. Michael and Fi arrive to free the kid from the shed. They leave with the kid. Sam and Santora arrive and plan to kill Jimmy and the kid. Sam volunteers to cover the front as Santora goes into the back. With a little help from Sam who makes a clean get away, Santora and his guys shoot each other. The happy parents and child meet with Fi and Michael. They are leaving Miami to make a new life. They’re going to work things out together. Michael reminds Fi of their date . . . with the storage unit. While cops wait outside the storage facility, Michael, Sam and Fi use a water saw to break into the backside of their storage unit. Pretty slick. Pun unintended. Night time at Michael’s. Detective Stalker is outside making the same vague threats. She found the storage unit with a newly made back door and a puddle. If she’s the new big bad . . . she’s got big shoes to fill. Michael’s birthday party at his Mom’s. Madeline cooked, which may not be a good thing. Sam’s gift was beer, a 5-pack. Was there a doubt? There are silent signals between Fi and Madeline. Mads gets Sam into the kitchen. Fi hands Michael her gift, a bayonet from WWI. Someone told her caring for Michael was like trench warfare. “So I thought you should arm yourself.” Michael has always had bad assed women in his life. Madeline, a force to be reckoned with. Fi, another no holds barred lady. Carla from last year who always kept Michael on his toes. And now we have Detective Paxson – which for me at least on this initial introduction is a bit underwhelming. If she is just to be an annoyance at this time, fine, but let’s get the ball rolling here. Michael should be in the thick of it soon – with enemies coming out of the woodwork for his blood. Rating: 4 out of 5. Paxson, being the weakest link. Hopefully that won’t last long. Even though there was no agency involvement, lots of good operative action and intelligence. Loved Howard. His heart as definitely in the right place. I wonder why he and his wife separated. Maybe she couldn’t relax? [wink] Everyone was on their game. With this cast, the acting is always stellar. We’re back to the tried and true motivation for Michael – a son in peril. The reverse interrogation was the hook for this episode’s title, Question and Answer. Next week’s episode is called End Run and Nate and Barry are back! Yea! This entry was posted on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 at 8:51 pm and is filed under Burn Notice, TV.
