This was a good issue. There’s plenty of action, some mustache twisting sinister plans and a bit of a tricky ending. The comic helps bring Bucky around a little into embracing his new role as Captain America. As seen, he runs around this issue dressed as the Winter Soldier. He has an excuse as to w...

This mini arc wraps up but does it really end? Captain America aka Bucky doesn’t really succeed in his mission but he does gather some intelligence that leads him into a much larger plot and story. The comic is a very good story, but the fact that the payoff is really a reveal and not much of a resolution is a bit of a downer. Still, this is a great read month in and month out.

The issue deals with two stories. In the present, Bucky is trying to stop Batroc and the man with no face from stealing whatever it is that they are stealing. The second story deals with Bucky’s past as the winter soldier when he was sent to kill the Chinese scientist and ran into the man with no face guarding the scientist. Bucky as Captain America struggles to piece everything together...

Captain America #43

Another element to this story is a series of flashbacks to World War II. This is setting things up for the larger arc. While we don’t have the full plot and context of these flashbacks, they are interesting to remind us how Bucky interacting with Steve. It’s a good way to introduce some old as new and make use of the dead Captain America.

It’s a good issue, but not great. It’s a breather issue. It sets things up and reminds us of the current state of the new Captain America. I like the direction and I like the potential, but this isn’t an arc like the ones with Red Skull and Sharon. We’ll see if it can build momentum.

Now that Brubaker’s monster story arc involving Lukin/Red Skull has concluded, I am curious to see what Brubaker has in store for us next. I enjoy Bucky as Captain America and I am looking forward to getting to see Bucky finally accepting his destiny and embracing his role as Captain America. I am confident that Captain America #43 will be a quality read. Let’s go ahead and hit this review.

I like that Bucky constantly thinks about what Steve would have done or if Steve would approve of what he is doing or be proud of him. Brubaker always gives the proper respect to Steve by having Bucky admit that Steve was a better fighter or that Steve was stronger or that Steve was faster. This is a smart way to try and win over comic book readers who might still be upse...

Captain America #42
Marvel Comics
Brubaker, Epting & Ross

At Skull base, Falcon and Black Widow are trying to find Sharon and are cutting their way through Skull’s minions. Zola and Skull are up to one last trick with Sharon as they hook her up to a machine. She fights back and blows up some of Zola’s work. They decide to scuttle the base.

The strength of this title has been the supporting cast and that is obvious in this issue. Cap is involved in the secondary story. He’s not fighting Skull, he’s fighting his daughter. Even Falcon and Widow are really just providing backup to Sharon. Sharon is the real star of the comic and it doesn’t feel at all forced. This has been building for some time.

I have already properly skewered Uncanny X-Men #500 in my review. Suffice it to say, I am still stunned that Brubaker was attached to such a poorly written comic book. I am a big fan of Brubaker and have loved his run on Captain America and his run on Daredevil. I find that Brubaker always delivers such a consistent and well crafted issue each and every month.

We cut to the SHIELD Helicarrier where the Falcon is upset with Tony for making Bucky the new Captain America. Tony retorts that he is simply honoring Steve’s wishes to carry on the Captain America tradition and to help save Bucky. Tony then suggests that the Falcon go help Bucky with his new role as Captain America. Falcon says that he will work with Bucky.

Brubaker ends Captain America #37 with a fantastic hook ending as Sharon realizes that the man in Arnim Zola’s lab may look and sound like Steve Rogers, but he is clearly not Steve Rogers. I imagine that this is the Grand Director who was the 1950’s Captain America who had his name legally changed to Steve Rogers and had surgery so he looked like Steve and had the same voice as Steve.

Captain America stands there and thinks how he will never replace Steve and that he can’t be Steve. However, he can honor Steve and make Steve proud of him with his own style of being Captain America.

I have to say that I think Bucky makes an awesome Captain America. Brubaker is handling Bucky’s transitioning into the role of Captain America perfectly. I like that Brubaker has Bucky continually emphasis that he is not Steve Rogers. That he cannot act like Steve and do the same things that Steve did. That Bucky has to do things his way in order to honor Steve and to make him proud.

Synopsis: We begin with Hawkeye having a flashback to when he first joined the Avengers and underwent hand to hand combat training from Captain America. Captain America acts like a total hard-ass jerk more reminiscent of Ultimate Captain America than the 616 version.

We cut to Wolverine arriving at some seedy dive for a beer. Wolverine asks the bartender who is in the back room. The bartender answers that Parker Robbins is back there. That Robbins is The Hood.

Wolverine kicks down the door to the back room. The Hood turns invisible. Wolverine grabs the bald guy and tells him that The Hood can turn visible again because Wolverine can smell him. The Hood appears with his guns drawn at Wolverine and informs Logan that he is the one who stinks, not The Hoo...

Synopsis: This issue starts with Sharon Carter talking with a S.H.I.E.L.D. psychiatrist for a psych evaluation.
