Rate Chicago Sports Slant: Sox reportedly make an offer to Abreu

Original at Chicago Sports Slant external link    Wed, Feb 4

By Kevin Chroust Tuesday, February 3, 2009 Sox reportedly make an offer to Abreu The White Sox have reportedly made outfielder Bobby Abreu a one-year offer worth $8 million. If this turns out to be true, you've got to think Jermaine Dye's days as a White Sox are numbered. That or Jim Thome is on his way out of town, but I haven't heard of any such market for Thome, who immediately has no value for half of Major League Baseball because he's a DH and only a DH. So let's assume Abreu takes the ego-hit and accepts a one-year deal for half of what he made last year. I think he's a downgrade from Dye and has certainly fallen off defensively, but I think there's some appeal here for Sox general manager Kenny Williams if you trade Dye to the right team. I haven't read this anywhere, b...   [read the full post]

Rate Chicago Sports Slant: Crazy Ideas For The Sox

Original at Chicago Sports Slant external link    Wed, Feb 4

By Paul Johnson Monday, February 2, 2009 Crazy Ideas For The Sox By PAUL JOHNSON Chicago Sports Slant With pitchers and catchers getting ready to report to Arizona in the next couple of weeks, there are still plenty of questions surrounding the White Sox roster. Two potential platoons (center field and second base), an unproven third baseman (or two), Bartolo Colon in the rotation and two players coming off of surprising career years make this a very interesting Spring Training on the South Side. GM Kenny Williams has always made risky and surprising moves, some great, some not-so-great. But he's never hesitant to pull the trigger on a deal if he feels that his team can improve. I know the company line is the team is ready to go to battle with this roster, and i...   [read the full post]

Rate Chicago Sports Slant: SOX ROUNDUP: Finances; potential leadoff men; pitching health

Original at Chicago Sports Slant external link    Sat, Jan 31

By Kevin Chroust Friday, January 30, 2009 SOX ROUNDUP: Finances; potential leadoff men; pitching health The latest on the White Sox from our three major newspapers in town as SoxFest kicks off for the weekend condensed down so you don't have to read for three hours to get the necessary info: – The Tribune's Mark Gonzales checks in with a bit of a financial analysis on the offseason moves and how what general manager Kenny Williams has done should allow the club some financial leverage to deal with Carlos Quentin, John Danks and Gavin Floyd when they become arbitration-eligible in 2010. In particular, trading Nick Swisher and Javier Vasquez are looking like deals that not only shipped off a pair of underachieving players, but also cleared the books enoug...   [read the full post]

Rate Chicago Sports Slant: These Sox Don’t Seem to Fit

Original at Chicago Sports Slant external link    Mon, Sep 29

By Chris De Salvo Saturday, September 27, 2008 These Sox Don’t Seem to Fit While it may be difficult to surmise the impact of the Sox’ third straight Metrodome loss last night, it’s certainly not the lasting impression most would deem worthy of post-season berth. ''I'm sick of [bleep]ing losing,'' A.J. Pierzynski said. ''It sucks, but we're still alive. Hopefully, we go home and win four games and we kick their ass on Tuesday.'' Yeah, Okay. While there is a part of me that agrees with the catcher’s rhetoric, there still had to be part of him that felt he was lying through his teeth. Sweeping the Indians (who, despite having no chance at making the playoffs, hate the White Sox just as much as the Twins) is far from a sure thing. Then again, that’s what we thought about eith...   [read the full post]

Rate Chicago Sports Slant: Ozzie: Kick'em While They're Down!

Original at Chicago Sports Slant external link    Thu, Sep 18

By Chris De Salvo Tuesday, September 16, 2008 Ozzie: Kick'em While They're Down! Ozzie Guillen has called a lot of people a lot of names during his tenure as the White Sox' manager. This happens so often it goes largely unnoticed. It's often dismissed as par for the course, but a noticable aspect of what makes...
