Chuck Wins the BEST Rock Music Moment of the week! October 31st, 2008 By Kate Blake, Admin MV Multipleverses is pleased to announce that for this week- Chuck wins our nod for best use of really cool rock music in a television episode. Last week Jensen Ackles air guitar to Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger was the big winner but this week it is all Chuck. The episode Chuck Vs Tom Sawyer had all of the great elements that are why Chuck is winning over new viewers while Heroes stagnates and My Own Worst Enemy struggles to find an audience. Chuck has four great elements to the show that keep it going- and all are balanced without one part ever completely taking over. Number 1- Chuck has this secret spy identity thing and has to save the world with help from Sarah and Casey while maintaining his low key life. This week this meant that Chuck came off as a total moron again to his sister making her worry. Number 2- The family dynamic- Chuck and his sister Ellie are close and he has a good relationship with his brother in law to be. The way they care and look out for each other never feels over the top or contrived. This week Ellie is worried about Chuck and losing his focus and she is so upset he has not ever finished college- not when he was only 12 credits which is one semester short of graduating from Stanford. Number 3- The Buy More- Chuck has trouble at work this week as an efficiency expert comes to town to put them in order. While doing his usual things Chuck is shocked when a thug comes in with a sketch of Lester. Lester? Burn out drunk Lester? Yes- Lester is important. Apparently he was a savant with an arcade game from the 80s which in reality has a real missile control code in it that terrorists want to their hands on. Number 4- Sarah and Chuck- this week Sarah gets to go out and kick some terrorist butt while Casey and Chuck work to get the stop codes. In the midst of the scheming- Chuck has set up a big demonstration so that Lester can show his old fans what he can still do. Lester chokes and passes out and Chuck has to step up and beat the game. The key to the game? It is the Rush song Tom Sawyer. The pattern of the game is in the music. Chuck wins and saves everyone- while maintaining his cover no less! Sarah feels bad that they have put Chuck in a position where his sister thinks he is a slacker and helps him get his diploma - there is a sweet Chuck and Sarah moment at the end. Not too much romance, not too much just bad guys, fun explosions, clever way to solve the problems and everyone ends the day happy- well except ultimately for the Buy More team who learn the efficiency expert will be their new assistant manager. The storytelling is linear, it has plenty of fun and some tenderness and feeling too. This combination along with all of the action makes Chuck fun to watch. With so many dark and dreary shows it is nice to have one series you can laugh with.
