By noreply@blogger.com (FLCeltsFan) It really is quiet out there basketball wise. Not much going on. We are between all the free agent signings and training camp and not much seems to be happening. Today, my thoughts and prayers are with the people in Hurricane Gustav's path. Living on the Gulf coast, I know that we are just a high pressure system away from it coming here and watch these storms very carefully. My heart goes out to everyone in New Orleans that have to leave their homes just 3 years after Katrina devastated the area. We are under a Tropical Storm warning here but the worst of the storm will be west of us. Please keep everyone in this storm's path in your thoughts and prayers. By noreply@blogger.com (FLCeltsFan) And, not only have the Cavs moved closer to a title this season, but they have big plans for the summer of 2010. We have been reading stories all summer about the Nets, Knicks and every one else making moves with the express purpose of clearing cap space for the free agent crop that will be available in 2010 and making a run at trying to lure LeBron James away from the Cavaliers. The Cavs, however, have plans of their own and are looking to bring LeBron back and give him another superstar playmate on the team. The vision has LeBron staying with the Cavs and playing alongside Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Josh Howard., Amare Stoudamire, or any of the other big-name players who can become a free agent in the summer of 2010. By noreply@blogger.com (FLCeltsFan) The Cavaliers were interested in Sixers free agent Louis Williams but on Thursday, Williams signed a 5 year contract that is worth a reported $25 million with the Sixers. Williams has come a long way since he was picked No. 45 overall pick in the 2005 draft as he became the first high school player selected by the Sixers since they chose Darryl Dawkins at No. 5 in 1975. Former Celtic, Sam Vincent, had a very short lived coaching job with the Charlotte Bobcats as he coached just one year before being replaced by the vagabond Coach Larry Brown. Less than three months after Vincent was dismissed by Jordan, who has a history of sticking with coaches for just one season, Vincent was named the new head coach of the D-League Anaheim Arsenal. Much of rebounding is effort and the Celtics clearly didn't put the effort out in the final period. Once again, the Celtics gave up too many easy shots as they allowed the Cavs to shoot 46% from the field. On the other end, the Celtics struggled with their offense, shooting just 39%. Unlike the other road games, the Celtics held the edge in free throws as they shot 20-26 to just 12-18 for the Cavs. Box Score] Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!] [read the full post]

Trading Places: LeBron Scores 37 as the "New" Cavs Beat the "New" Bulls
Original at 20 Second Timeout
• Sun, Mar 2
By David Friedman Brown's take on the Cleveland-Chicago-Seattle deal is that the Cavaliers have improved their frontcourt depth by pairing Wallace and Smith with Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao. Brown said that now the Cavaliers can withstand an injury to one of those players. He also pointed out one downside: Wallace and Varejao are only able to score by either getting feeds from James for layups or by getting offensive rebounds. Brown added that West's ballhandling and passing skills should help the Cavaliers in the open court, while Szczerbiak's shooting ability spaces the court. I agree with everything that Brown said but the Ilgauskas-Gooden-Varejao frontcourt (with cameos by Donyell Marshall) worked out pretty well in last year's playoffs an... [read the full post]

Cleveland Romps: Cavs Smash Sonics, 95-79
Original at 20 Second Timeout
• Wed, Jan 9
By David Friedman LeBron James had 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals as Cleveland cruised to a 95-79 home victory versus Seattle. The Cavaliers have a season-high tying four game winning streak, have won six out of seven games for the first time this season and improved to 4-0 in 2008. The Cavaliers maintained control throughout most of the game and Cleveland led 81-62 by the 8:36 mark of the fourth quarter, enabling James to sit out the remainder of the game so that he will be well rested for the second half of the back to back, which takes place in Atlanta. James received strong support from Daniel Gibson (17 points, 5-8 three point shooting) and Anderson Varejao (14 points, nine rebounds, a game-high plus/minus rating of +16). Zydrunas I... The One They Owed Them: Cavaliers Repay Mavericks for Opening Night Defeat
Original at 20 Second Timeout
• Fri, Dec 28
By David Friedman The Cleveland Cavaliers took another step toward regaining the form that carried them to the 2007 NBA Finals, earning an 88-81 road win versus the Dallas Mavericks. The Cavaliers had not won in Dallas since 2000 and were booed on opening night by their home court fans during an embarrassing 92-74 loss to the Mavericks; as Chris Berman (channeling Howard Cosell, as he often does) would say, "I remember because I was there." The formula for the Cleveland win, as usual for this team, consisted of rebounding (56-45 advantage), defense (Dallas shot .365 from the field and scored fewer than 20 points in two quarters) and the all-around brilliance of LeBron James (game-high 24 points, eight rebounds, seven assists). This was not a pretty game by a... [read the full post]

Cavs Show Signs of Life, Cool off Heat
Original at 20 Second Timeout
• Tue, Dec 25
By David Friedman With their rotation finally set up in optimum fashion, the Cavaliers began the game with a 9-2 run, with all of the points scored either in the paint or at the free throw line. Cleveland led 25-17 at the end of the first quarter. Riley switched to a zone defense to try to keep the Cavaliers out of the paint and the Heat enjoyed some success with this strategy, eventually taking a 47-43 lead by halftime. Riley, like many NBA coaches, generally disdains zone defenses but the zone is a good change of pace defense to use against Cleveland because it takes advantage of two of the team's weaknesses: the lack of a true point guard and a dearth of outside shooting in the starting lineup. Last season, Cleveland Coach Mike Brown would sometimes attack the zone... [read the full post]

Fourth Quarter Rally Propels Cavaliers to Victory Over the Lakers
Original at 20 Second Timeout
• Fri, Dec 21
By David Friedman The L.A. Lakers built an 11 point lead against the Cleveland Cavaliers with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter but less than three minutes later that entire advantage was gone and by the 9:19 mark of the fourth quarter the Cavaliers were up by five. Instead of adding one more road victory to their surprising early season resume, the Lakers were left trying to explain yet another win that slipped from their grasp in the fourth quarter, a disturbing trend that includes losses to Milwaukee, New Jersey and Golden State. Meanwhile, Cleveland's 94-90 triumph was a welcome turnaround after Wednesday's embarrassing 108-90 loss to the New York Knicks. As usual, LeBron James led the way for Cleveland, scoring a game-high 33 points on 12-29 field goa... [read the full post]

Instant Classic: LeBron's 48 Points Lift Cavs to Thrilling Double Overtime Win
Original at 20 Second Timeout

By David Friedman Ilgauskas' layup at the 7:48 mark of the fourth quarter put Cleveland ahead 79-76. That was the last field goal made by a Cavalier other than James. Detroit promptly went on a 12-2 run to seemingly take control of the game with just 3:15 left. James' layup cut the margin to 88-83, though he missed a free throw to complete the three point play. Cleveland got a stop and then Drew Gooden split a pair of free throws with 2:49 remaining. That was the last point scored by a Cavalier other than James. The only points scored by either team in the next 2:18 were a three pointer and a dunk by James, putting Cleveland ahead 89-88. King James Uses Marshall Plan to Beat Nets
Original at 20 Second Timeout
• Fri, May 18
By David Friedman Great all around play by LeBron James (23 points, eight rebounds, eight assists) and timely three point shooting by Donyell Marshall (18 points, 6-10 from three point range) carried the Cleveland Cavaliers to an 88-72 Game Six victory over the New Jersey Nets. The win earned the Cavaliers a berth in the Eastern Conference Finals, where they will face the Detroit Pistons, who eliminated the Cavaliers from the 2006 playoffs in a hard fought seven game series. James struggled a bit with his shooting (8-20 from the field, 6-9 from the free throw line) but he set the tone early in the game and made several big plays down the stretch. Cavaliers Outlast Wizards, 97-82
Original at 20 Second Timeout

By David Friedman Cleveland jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead, prompting an early Wizards timeout, but the Cavaliers were not able to put Washington away. The margin bounced between five and seven points for most of the first quarter and the Cavaliers led 27-20 at the end of the period. James had nine points on 4-4 shooting and four assists, while Jamison had seven points on 3-8 shooting. The Cavaliers briefly had a 10 point lead in the second quarter but were not able to build on that and still led by seven at halftime, 48-41. James shot 0-4 in the second quarter, but Hughes picked up the slack with 10 points. By David Friedman Cleveland only outscored Milwaukee 25-21 in the third quarter and the Cavs had a 79-71 lead going into the fourth quarter (New Jersey led Chicago 52-40 at halftime). James scored seven points in the final period but the unlikely hero for the Cavaliers was Donyell Marshall, who scored 12 points on 5-6 shooting and added four rebounds. Cleveland led by as many as 17 and never let the Bucks get within 10 after pushing the margin to double digits with 10:56 remaining. The undermanned Bucks played without All-Star Michael Redd, Dan Gadzuric and Brian Skinner and lost starting center Jared Reiner early in the game after he injured his knee.
