The Big Three all played under 9 minutes in this game and Doc went with various combinations off the bench for the rest of the game. At times the Celtics' bench was playing against the Cavs starters. The Cavs got out to an 11 point lead but the Celtics young guns fought back and pulled out the 96-94 win. I wonder if the drop in playing time for the starters had anything to do with how hard they are playing when they are in. At one point, Paul Pierce hit the floor chasing a loose ball and his head bounced off the floor. He went to the bench checking on his teeth and that was the end of the starters playing time.   [read the full post]

The Celtics are going back to Boston with their series tied at 2 games apiece once again. In 5 tries, they inexplicably have not been able to win on the road. After a blow out in game 3, they came out more aggressively in this one and kept it close until the final 2 minutes when the Cavaliers pulled away. The Celtics were within 4 with 2:43 left in the game but they allowed the Cavs to go on a 9-2 run to end the game as the Cavs scored on a variety of dunks and 3 pointers to close out the game. Joe Smith added 17 points on 7-8 field goal shooting, Wally Szczerbiak scored 16 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 12 points, eight rebounds and a playoff career-high six assists. Most fans and writers were predicting a sweep after the Celtics dominated the Hawks by an average of 21 points per game in their first two home games. But, the Celtics played very un-Celticlike in Atlanta. Their trademark defense was nowhere to be found and ubuntu went out the window as it seemed to be each man for himself. The Cavaliers have also been here. Last season they were down 0-2 to the Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals. They went on to beat the Pistons in 6 games before being swept in the finals by the Spurs. The Cavs know how to bounce back and win with their backs against the wall. And, of course, if the Celts close out the Hawks and the Wizards force the Cavs to a seventh game, the C’s will be off Sunday. So, if the Celtics win and Cavs lose, Celtics have Sunday off. That is the best case scenario so that the Celtics can get a bit of rest and practice in. But, if the Celtics and Cavs both win, Round 2 starts Sunday at 1.
