Boston Globe reviews the Idols on Tour and Give Thumbs Up to David Cook and Brooke White August 18th, 2008 The Idols played in Worcester, MA just down the road from where your EH team used to live. Worcester has a great concert venue and like the Jobbing Arena where we saw the Idols play on the opening night of the tour here in Glendale, AZ back in July , it doubles as a hockey rink so it is a cool and comfortable retreat from a hot summer night and great for a concert! Boston Globe Mark Hirsch wrote a great review of the show, pretty much echoing our own experience with one difference- we liked Michael Johns and his smoking vocals. Hirsch has this to say about Chikeze and Carly “High-energy R&B wildcard Chikezie showed what a shame it was that he was eliminated so early, though it had the serendipitous benefit of giving the concert an unexpectedly strong start. Carly Smithson’s pointed and powerful voice finally found its fit with “Bring Me to Life,” the exact type of song she never got a chance to choose on the show.” He continues with this then about two of our Idol favorites “Those performers seemed to be on their way. Brooke White and David Cook, on the other hand, were the only two who seemed fully formed already. Playing heartfelt versions of “Let It Be” and Coldplay’s “Yellow” on a baby grand piano and switching to acoustic guitar for a fine, perfectly chosen version of Feist’s “1234,” White looked and sounded like a performer sure of herself. But nothing compared to the chaos that ensued when winner Cook came out. He held out the microphone at one point in an attempt to get everyone to join in on coronation song “Time of My Life,” but there was no singing, only screaming. But he made a canny move by changing up a power-ballad-heavy set with Foo Fighters’ “My Hero,” which proved that he might actually have it in him to be the rocker he’s been labeled as.” Hirsch is in agreement with us and most of the viewing public- the group numbers- not so good and it sounds like they have not improved over time on the road. Glad to read that more and more people are getting the Cook vibe and I am so happy to read such great words about Brooke- she is a Mesa, AZ girl after all!
