Eno: "Daly had all the credentials to be a Pistons coach in 1983, which were none!" Eno: "He was the first NBA coach who really put it out there that this is a player’s league." Big Al: "He wasn’t a great Xs and Os guy, like Larry Brown, but he could manage people." Eno: "I remember when Chuck replaced Bill Laimbeer in the 1990 Finals with William Bedford for a few minutes in Game Three. I thought, ‘Wow, what a message.’" Big Al: "His death hit me hard." 2009 NHL, NBA Playoffs In Detroit: When Does The Drama Arrive?
Original at gregeno (Blogspot)
• Mon, Apr 20
By Greg Eno(noreply@blogger.com) You call these "the playoffs"? In the NBA, the Pistons appear to be content with playing the part of the Washington Generals to the Cleveland Cavaliers' Harlem Globetrotters. To paraphrase Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee, "That's not the playoffs...(withdraws a Red Wings-Predators or Pistons-Sixers video)...now that's the playoffs!" Losing without drama is OK, if you choose not to care about the losers. I'm rather fed up with the Pistons' old guard and their overmatched head coach anyway. Can't wait till the Cavs get done with them, frankly. I just hope no one gets hurt. Or in New Jersey, where the Carolina Hurricanes split the first two games? I'm NOT sorry about that one. The Pistons annoy me. Wake me when the playoffs really get going, OK? [read the full post]

Only one of those teams -- the Celtics (and only recently) -- have won anything of note after Billups' banishment. Meanwhile, with the Pistons, Billups has appeared in six straight conference finals, two NBA Finals, and won a championship. Not bad for a four-time loser. Tayshaun Prince, from the University of Kentucky. They play some good basketball down there, in case you didn't know. But when Joe Dumars drafted Prince in 2002, there were yawns. Except from the Pistons themselves. In his rookie season, Prince rarely got off the bench. The yawners kept yawning. Until the 2003 playoffs, when Prince became coach Rick C... [read the full post]

Celtics Survive Late Detroit Rally to Win Game Five, 106-102
Original at 20 Second Timeout

By noreply@blogger.com (David Friedman) The Pistons have made it to the Eastern Conference Finals for six straight seasons but unless they can win two games in a row against the team with the best regular season record in the NBA this will be their third consecutive defeat in this round of the playoffs. Their only two Finals appearances during the past six years came with Larry Brown as the coach and a young Ben Wallace patrolling the paint. Without Brown's leadership and Wallace's paint presence, the Pistons have simply not been the same team in the playoffs: they do not defend the paint well on a consistent basis against elite teams and their "liberation offense" is unproductive for long stretches. By David Friedman The Detroit Pistons own the longest winning streak in the league (nine games) now that Utah ended Portland's run at 13 games. If the Celtics and Pistons meet in the playoffs we will witness an interesting matchup between Boston's collection of stars who have never won anything and Detroit's group of stars who won one title but act as though it is disrespectful not to consider them the team of the decade. As usual, the Spurs are hiding in the weeds, attracting little attention and biding their time until the playoffs. The Suns have an excellent record but there are signs of discord in the desert. Despite their protestations to the contrary, Phoenix misses Kurt Thomas' low post defense and there seems to be a disconnect within the organization b... [read the full post]
