By J. Caleb Mozzocco “I never got to be Frank Miller big, but I got to be Neil Gaiman big”: That’s Neil Gaiman talking about how popular he is in the comics field, as part of an interview with the Toronto Star. It’s been a few days since I linked to an interview with Neil Gaiman, so I was [...]

This earned him critical acclaim across the board, with Alan Moore (see Watchmen review) referring to it as “the best analysis of the medium that I have ever encountered,” and Frank Miller calling him “just about the smartest guy in comics. ...

By Jeff Lester(noreply@blogger.com) Long before the movie came out, I began hoping that Miller was trying to update Eisner's Spirit for a modern audience and had tumbled to the idea that the closest analogue to Eisner's oddball mix of noir and vaudeville, slapstick and sturm-und-drang, melodrama and high yucks, that the au...

By J. Caleb Mozzocco The next best thing to Frank Miller’s Mary Worth?: The other day I mentioned an old Jules Feiffer essay in which he compares Will Eisner’s The Spirit character to Mary Worth, and wondered aloud what Frank Miller’s Mary Worth movie might look like. Reader Johnny Dale wrote in to inform me of s...

By Ben Child Will Eisner's noirish 1940s comic strip was an inspiration for Frank Miller creations such as Sin City. So it's a little ironic that most critics reckon this big-screen adaptation of The Spirit looks like a pale facsimile of the comic-book-writer-turned-director Miller's 2005 rework...

By noreply@blogger.com (collectededitions) Green Arrow: Year One is a re-telling of the origin of Green Arrow by writer Andy Diggle and artist Jock (real name Mark Simpson) that tries to do what Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli did for Batman to its title character. Although it might not be quite up to the standard of the sublime Bat...

By Hugh Hart Miller knew Eisner personally, carved out his own niche as a groundbreaking graphic novelist back in the '80s and got hands-on filmmaking experience when he co-directed the big-screen adaptation of his own graphic novel Sin City with Robert Rodriguez.

By Elf Girl I am so not a fan of Frank Miller, so this bit of news actually made me smile. A reader for Ain't it Cool News claims to have seen The Spirit and writes a very long winded review of it, most of which is pretty funny (though the rape analogy just pisses me off; watching a bad movie is NOT comparable to...

By Chris Mautner The new Cartoon Network show Batman: The Brave and the Bold swaps the traditional noir tinge of such Batman cartoons like the original animated series and Batman Beyond (we’ll just forget about the recent “The Batman” OK?) in favor of a more sunny, pop art approach, and I for one couldn’t b...

By Rokk Krinn Creative Team Writer: Frank Miller Penciler: Jim Lee Inker: Scott Williams Comments The Good: All Star Batman #6 was a great read. I am having an absolute blast reading this title. I know that a lot of people have been put off by Miller’s goddamn Batman especially when Batman locked Dick Grayson in the Batcave and left him to feed off rats. Personally, I don’t mind this version of Batman at all. It is Frank Miller, people. Miller has never been shy about his writing style. Miller is not hard to gauge. You know exactly what you are going to get when you read a Frank Miller comic book. You will get a film noir themed story full of testosterone, whiskey and cigarette smoke. The women are women and the men are men and they can all kick ass. [read the full post]

By Kati Irons 300, based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, which was inspired by Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield, tells the tale of Leonidas, King of Sparta, who led 300 Spartan soldiers against the hitherto undefeated Persian army. By Ray Wong Hollywood has long been in love with Frank Miller's graphic novels, from RoboCop to Sin City. His 300 takes us back more than two thousand years to the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. In truth, this is more of a fantasy than a historical drama.
