Harper’s Island: Have you made the gank of the week your guilty pleasure? Find more photos like this on Multipleverses Head to our forums to view the episode pics in the slideshow above By Kate Blake, Editor Multipleverses I have a confession to make- I am well over the age of consent and I find myself eagerly awaiting each week for the time that I can kick back and watch my favorite guilty pleasure. The CBS spring series Harper’s Island has nicely filled in for my Supernatural boys while they are on hiatus. Jim Beaver plays the shady town sheriff so I get my Bobby fill and get to watch people running around in the dark after faceless mysterious forces that are wreaking havoc at every turn. This week was week 9 out of 13 so things are really heating up on the island. If you haven’t watched the series this is what you need to know. Trish and her fiance Henry have gathered their friends and family for what was supposed to be a lovely small wedding at a gorgeous old inn on a quaint island off the coast of Seattle. The island has a gruesome past though. 7 years earlier a mad killer named John Wakefield ( who we see in photos as Callum Keith Remy aka Leoben on BSG) killed a bunch of women including the sheriff’s wife. The sheriff’s daughter Abby is back on the island for the first time in years because she is best friends with the groom Henry.Henry is played by a familiar face to sci-fi fans- I loved Christopher Gorham in Odyssey 5 where he was an astronaut sent back in time to stop the end of the world. The series begins with one horrific death and the body count just keeps going week after week like any good horror and mystery film. I love the use of the classic locked room formula here. The locked room refers to a confined environment- in this case the island. Though people have ways to get off the island, the actual coming and going is well monitored while the woods surrounding the inn and town are deep, dark and full of places for people to get into trouble where nobody can hear you scream. There have been some nice surprises along the way- the biggest one being that the blond girl is smart, sassy and strong and has stood by her guy. Cameron Richardson played Paula the jealous townie in FOX’s Point Pleasant a few years back and never made much of an impression on me. She is refreshing and very likable here on Harper’s Island. I find myself cheering for her and her Englishman. Katie Cassidy ( Ruby on Supernatural) and Gina Holden (Patricia Swann, Smallville and Dale on Flash Gordon) are sisters and well cast. The two actresses are believable as siblings and Gina as Shea Wellington seems incredibly tightly wound. Maybe this is because her daughter Madison is one of the creepiest little girls I have seen outside of Eric Kripke’s world on Supernatural. Gina was in the second Supernatural episode Wendigo if you are wondering- she was the sister looking for her brother in the woods and made the infamous comment that sparked the “I don’t do shorts sweet heart” from Dean Winchester. Back to the island- other familiar faces include Ben Cotton- seen as the sin Greed in Supernatural’s season 3 opener- yeah Katie got to gank him good in that one! Ben plays the annoying town bully Shane. He also played the annoying Cavanaugh who had it in for Dr Weir on Stargate Atlantis and nearly got everyone killed when the wraith attacked the space station in the Pegasus galaxy- yeah he’s just that kind of guy. I keep waiting for his number to be up- but so far he is still standing. Another Supernatural alum- Chris Gauthier – aka Ronald Resnick , who did a long stint on Eureka as Vincent- has already been dispatched on Harper’s Island. His character was a mess before the murderous happenings began and you knew his days were numbered it was just a question of when. The younger crowd have not been the only victims. Trish’s family has been hard hit by the killings and Henry’s as well. The focus of the story right now seems to be trying to pin things on Abby and her relationship to the previous killer- Wakefield. Personally- I think this is all a red herring and that something else and someone else with a grudge against Henry and Trish’s families is behind the whole thing. We shall have to wait and see! If you haven’t watched the show- I highly recommend it for the entertainment value. You can catch up online at CBS.com and you can download episodes on iTunes.
