Ariza averaged 23.3 ppg while shooting .500 from the field (including the aforementioned .524 from three point range) in his first three games as a Rocket but he has averaged 16.9 ppg on .361 field goal shooting (69-191) since that time. Many NBA players are capable of averaging 15-18 ppg if they have the opportunity to fire up enough shots but that does not make them stars. A throng of about 500 screaming fans welcomed Artest with enthusiastic cheers. With the addition of Artest, the Rockets have to be considered a threat to win it all. Artest will be playing alongside Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady forming their own Big 3 and they don't come any bigger than Yao. In any case, without the injured Yao Ming they had no way of effectively handling O'Neal inside, particularly after O'Neal drew two early fouls on Dikembe Mutombo. Phoenix jumped out to a 17-7 lead and dominated the first half but the Rockets did not quit, trimming a huge margin to just 93-85 after McGrady fed Bobby Jackson for a three pointer. There isn't an asterisk on this one either. Yes, the Rockets didn't have Yao but the Celtics didn't have Ray Allen, either. And 10 of those wins were without Yao so it isn't like he just went out. Like the Houston fans, though, I questioned Doc keeping KG on the floor with less than 2 minutes left in the game and up 20+ points. KG is too valuable to the Celtics to risk an injury in garbage time. If the Celtics are in the west I don't think the'd be in the top 5. The record doesn't mean much.
