By ComicList Comics Legend Bob Layton Comics Legend Bob Layton Layton worked on two different runs of the original Iron Man series, co-plotting with writer David Michelinie on both. He inked the pencils of John Romita, Jr. on issues 116 through 154, and finished the art of (primarily) Mark D. Bright and Jackson “Butch” Guice between issues 215 and 250, acting as primary penciler on several of the last ten issues. Layton helped give a more technological look to Iron Man, and aided Michelinie in developing a deeper and more emotionally vulnerable man inside the armor, Tony Stark. By tfaw Two words. Iron Man. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a ton of great stuff in today’s 28 Days of Comics, but if you’re anything like me, the first “I” title that jumps to mind is old Shell-head. Today is an absolutely incredible time to catch up on the myriad exploits of Tony Stark and his armored alter-ego. Be it Iron Man, Invincible Iron Man, or even Iron Man: Director of Shield–well, those all start with “I” and thus are on sale today (but Avengers, being an “A” title, is not). But I think if I had to narrow it down to just one tale to recommend, I’d go with Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle. Two words. Iron Man. He’s in his seventies and he’s suffering from some form body erosion through his nervous system that gives him the shakes. Tony is looking for the next generation of Iron Man because he just can’t do it any more. This is a story about Tony coming to terms with being old and deciding how and who to carry on the Iron Man legacy. It’s an exploration of Stark and his triumphs as well as his demons. This comic doesn’t cover everything about Stark that you’d wonder about, but it sure hits a lot of them. [read the full post]

We are getting a total of 18 titles. This selection of titles is evenly split between Marvel and DC. I am going to have to take an extra long lunch hour today in order to get a head start on all of these comic books. I have little interest in Mighty Avengers #19. This looks to be yet another boring flashback Secret Invasion tie-in issue. With Secret Invasion lumbering on with little direction or purpose, the various tie-in issues on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers are rapidly dropping in terms of quality. I see no reason for that trend to reverse itself with Mighty Avengers #19. [read the full post]

Iron Man is hands down my favorite Marvel character. But, even I thought Tony was a tool after reading Invincible Iron Man #7. It is obvious that Fraction has no love or connection at all with Tony Stark or the Iron Man franchise. You know, Iron Man: Then End #1 may have been an old school story that younger readers probably laughed at, but the fact is that the reader gets a clear sense that Michelinie and Layton love Iron Man’s character. And when a writer has respect and love for a character the story always is a much more enjoyable read. [read the full post]

Hulk Gray TP REVIEW

• Sat, Sep 20
By ComicList Hulk: Gray, published by Marvel Comics, 6-issue miniseries, 32 pages, $3.50. It’s not that writer Jeph Loeb’s characterization is bad, there’s just nothing new, here. We’ve seen General Thunderbolt Ross’ obsessive hunting of the Hulk. We’ve seen the monster’s outrage at being locked in an underground bunker. We’ve seen the Hulk battle Iron Man, Betty Ross (the General’s daughter) pine away over Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk), Banner lament his Jekyll-and-Hyde condition, and Dr. Leonard Samson, Psychiatrist, analyze Bruce/Hulk, his behaviors and relationships. No, we’ve never seen the Hulk caress a cute little furry animal to death, and, while unusual (and creepy), that’s hardly enough on which to base a six-issue mini. [read the full post]

This week is offers up a rather weak and unimpressive selection of comic books from the House of Ideas. I am going to have to go with Sub-Mariner: The Depths #1. I like Esad Ribic’s artwork so I know I will at least dig how this issue looks. And I have always liked Namor’s character. Namor is Marvel’s answer to Black Adam. I would like to see Marvel allow Namor to achieve his full potential. Thank god, Marvel decided to cancel Iron Man: Director of SHIELD and give us this piece of fluff in Invincible Iron Man. Still, I have faith in Krueger to deliver a quality read. Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? I cannot say that I am all that excited about Invincible Iron Man #4.
