Def Jam’s Most Embarrassing MomentsOriginal at oghiphop.com
• Sat, Oct 17
By Carsten If you haven’t noticed, 2009 is a pretty big year for Def Jam Recordings. And it’s not because they’re home to some of the biggest names in pop music (Rihanna, Kanye West, The Dream). The iconic label that put rap on the mainstream map turns 25 this year, an anniversary that’s being commemorated by a special CD box set and last night’s VH1 Hip-Hop Honors tribute. WHAT: After learning that Def Jam brass held a meeting regarding Jay-Z’s “Black Album” without Roc-A-Fella’s CEO, Dame Dash bursts into one of their meetings and let’s ‘em know how he really feels. You thought Dame blacking on Kevin Liles was emasculating, imagine how DJ employee Randy Ackerman felt when Dame took aim and aired out his dirty laundry. Now the whole building knows he gets s... Jay-Z Says Michael Jackson Sang Backup on “Girls, Girls, Girls”

By Carsten Aparrently Jiggaman has collaborated with MJ in more occasions than fans were aware of. In the new issue of NME Jay-Z pays tribute to fallen legend Michael Jackson, and in doing so he revealed a piece of music history that until now was unknown. Jay-Z on The Oprah Winfrey Show (video)Original at oghiphop.com
• Fri, Sep 25
By OGhiphop Did you watch Jay-Z on Oprah yesterday? No, because you have a job. It wa pretty lame. Jay’s always been a notoriously challenging interview subject—cool and measured, and terse, and more comfortable with silence than anyone he’s talking to. Oprah did her nerdball chummy shtick, and he played along nicely, over-employing the same forced chuckle he humored David Letterman with two weeks ago. The highlight was probably when he tried to teach her to rap. Jay wrote a tight little rhyme, actually, seemingly off the top of his head. (”Little boy from Brooklyn/Made it out the Stuy/Little girl from down south/Made it to the Chi…”) But Oprah didn’t even give it an honest effort, choosing instead to ham it up in her role as the rhythmless square. By Carsten “So on Trevor Nelson’s BBC Radio One show recently, a seemingly frustrated Jay-Z responded to Nelson’s suggestion that Kanye wouldn’t have pulled his VMA stunt on 50 as he did Taylor Swift by saying at the 1:23:47 mark (below), “I think he would have done it if it was 50 Cent. No one’s scared of 50 Cent….I just want everyone to know no one’s scared of 50 Cent!” Now of course Ye wouldn’t have done it if it were Gary Coleman but that’s besides the point, the point is 50 got what he wanted after jabbing at Hov on “Flight 187″ and will gladly use this to create some type of “beef” to promote the steamless and still no release date BISD lp. Jay-Z: I Want My Maybach
Original at oghiphop.com
• Sat, May 16
By Carsten When Jay-Z headlined last month at the University of Arizona, the rapper banked a whopping $750,000 for his set. But the chart-topping performer did not get every perk requested in his concert rider, since the school does not provide artists with alcohol, tobacco, or $400,000 luxury vehicles. As seen on the following pages from his 2009 concert rider, Jay-Z (real name: Shawn Carter) demands that promoters provide him with ground transportation while he is in town performing. Specifically, the rap star requires a late-model black Maybach (either the 57 or 62 model) with tinted windows. Carter’s dressing room (72 degrees, please) must be stocked with Sapporo beer, vodka, tequila, and two bottles of $300 Champagne. Oh, and the 39-year-o... [read the full post]

UGK - 4 Life
Original at oghiphop.com
• Sun, Apr 12
By Carsten Intro – The intro is simple, clean - just the ghost of Pimp’s voice and a wailing guitar line. You can tell from the first two-minutes of UGK 4 Life that this will be a straight-up UGK album, not a melodramatic capitalization on Pimp’s death. By contrast, Diddy would have had a chamber orchestra and the entire Vienna Boy’s Choir singing while a fireworks display exploded in the background. This song takes us to that signature UGK production that we’re used to hearing Bun and Pimp spitting on, and they don’t disappoint with this offering. Pimp delivers his verse and the chorus based off of a similar form that his displayed on Jay-Z classic “Big Pimpin’”. Bun comes correct with his verse as well displaying why he truly is one of the most underrated em... [read the full post]

The craze of The Grey Album by Danger Mouse caused everyone and their aunties to develop a remix album of their own to the not-so-rare Jay-Z a cappellas. Fact: The album was a work of genius. Fact: Many of the other remix albums that were attempted were tacky, cheesy, obvious and silly. Regardless, it led to the widely publicized and popular Collision Course done by Linkin Park with Jay’s participation and acceptance.
