But despite his vocal limitations, he manages to put out some good, catchy songs and decent albums. Currently prepping the release of her debut album, The Bridge on SRC Records, Melanie is about to embarque on the ride of her life. Already being tauted as Kanye West’s new “it” girl and making the Top 5 Artists to Watch in 2009 list in Entertainment Weekly, Ms. Fiona has the key ingredients necessary to be a household name by this time next year. Kanye West, who was sitting front row at the Vuitton show, has designed a line of five LV sneakers. Only one design, above, was featured in the show — a monochromatic midtop with no frills, save for a quilted flap in the back, all the easier to tuck pants into. “The inspiration came from a jacket with a huge collar in the movie ‘Dune,’ ” West says. “Most sneakers focus on the tongue, so I wanted to do something different.” West knows whereof he speaks: he says he has no idea how many shoes he owns, but he does know that he routinely needs to send shipments off to storage. By Carsten Kanye’s warbling, robotic voice comes courtesy of a studio trick that corrects the pitch of a vocalist (i.e. it forces the sound into key). Best known as “Auto-Tune,” the brand name of the software, the corrective tactic is the overused trend of the year, audible on Pop, R&B and Hip Hop songs up and down the charts. Once referred to as “the Cher effect” (the use of the trick on her hit “Believe” a decade ago was the first time most heard the sound), it is now often referenced as “the T Pain effect.” The hit singer/rapper/producer uses Auto-Tune as much as Jimi Hendrix used his guitar. By Carsten This week, Queens rapper Consequence inked a deal with Universal/Motown Records and now he’s preparing to release his sophomore album which will be executive produced by Kanye West and Q-Tip. SOHH caught up with the Cons to discuss the upcoming LP. According to Consequence, West was very excited about prospect of swapping loops with Q-Tip. “For Kanye, even with him being a mega star, it’s still a high for him to do it because he’s a Tribe fan. He loves Tribe.” Consequence told SOHH that having Q-Tip and Ye onboard fufills his need for big name features though he did hint at a possible appearance by Jay-Z. Pharrell, Kanye, Cee-Lo and Santogold join the high-profile guest list, while Common shifts his lyrical focus from his brothers and the socio-economic blight that affects their communities to booty and bling. The heartfelt ‘Changes’ and ‘Inhale’ aside, this is Common as you’ve never heard him. It’s oddly shocking to hear him declare, ‘I’m gonna touch you where the sun don’t shine,’ (on ‘Sex 4 Suga’), or, ‘This is hip hop, baby,’ (‘Announcement’), because Common simply doesn’t do smut, strut or swagger.
