By Carsten If you haven’t noticed, 2009 is a pretty big year for Def Jam Recordings. And it’s not because they’re home to some of the biggest names in pop music (Rihanna, Kanye West, The Dream). The iconic label that put rap on the mainstream map turns 25 this year, an anniversary that’s being commemorated by a special CD box set and last night’s VH1 Hip-Hop Honors tribute. Kanye West: It expresses my sensibility of design: what I want to do with clothing, with hotels eventually. The type of colors that I live in. Kanye West: We had a lot of conversations like, “We wanna just put it on eBay,” and I’m like, “No! People need to be able to get this shoe!” At first they were only gonna do 3,000 pairs. Now they’re doing 9,000, which is still limited. It’s not like it’s 200,000. Kanye West: Oh my god, they’re gonna be out of there! Toot! [Laughs.] They’re not even gonna hit the ground. By Carsten When it comes to vocal skills, Dream is something of a lightweight, and is very obviously influenced by two singers, Usher and (especially) R. Kelly. But despite his vocal limitations, he manages to put out some good, catchy songs and decent albums. But again, his best music isn’t exemplified by disposable, forgettable tracks like the album’s first single, “Rockin’ That Sh*t,” or the Michael Jackson-ish party song “Walkin’ On the Moon,” which features Kanye West. The Unraveling Of Kanye WestOriginal at oghiphop.com
• Tue, Feb 17
By Carsten “You look like a rapper.” The past 15 months have indeed put years on Kanye West’s life. Even for the 31-year-old workaholic, a man who invented his megastardom by obsessively burning the candle at both ends, they’ve been long. West didn’t just lose, as he puts it, “more than I could ever picture losing”: his mother, Donda West, to complications from cosmetic surgery, and his fiancée, Alexis Phifer, to a breakup after six years of dating. He shouldered his loss center stage. In the minds of many, he’s lost it completely with his fourth and latest album, 808s & Heartbreak, and his announcement that his new goal is to intern for a designer like Louis Vuitton’s Marc Jacobs or Jil Sander’s Raf Simons. By Carsten A couple of weeks ago, we introduced you to a bright new star by the name of Melanie Fiona. Currently prepping the release of her debut album, The Bridge on SRC Records, Melanie is about to embarque on the ride of her life. Already being tauted as Kanye West’s new “it” girl and making the Top 5 Artists to Watch in 2009 list in Entertainment Weekly, Ms. Fiona has the key ingredients necessary to be a household name by this time next year. The lead single to the album, “Give It To Me Right” (listen below), samples the Zombies’ 1968 song “Time of The Season”. As one of my personal favorite songs of all time, Melanie adds her touch of soul to bring the track up 30 years to today. [read the full post]

By OGhiphop I saw this on postsecrets today via Joyce. My initial reaction was, “about time!” but then I thought about it a second and decided, no, “that’s about right.” I know this discussion has been covered by everyone and their local news reporters but think about it hip-hop party people; we have a president that bumps Fugees and Kanye West. We have world renown scholars vibing with Dead Prez and Mos Def; and not just your average scholar either; we’re talking about someone that got immediate tennure at Princeton after he hopped over from Harvard. I admit my overarching message is cliche; “hip-hop has come a long way.” But the awe of such an energy has to be admired. To list a few cliches, let me start with: the marketing power of hip-hop (already discus... [read the full post]
Kanye’s Louis Vuitton Kicks (A Closer Look)
Original at oghiphop.com
• Fri, Jan 23
By OGhiphop Marc Jacobs and the Louis Vuitton men’s studio director Paul Helbers have some design competition this season. Kanye West, who was sitting front row at the Vuitton show, has designed a line of five LV sneakers. Only one design, above, was featured in the show — a monochromatic midtop with no frills, save for a quilted flap in the back, all the easier to tuck pants into. “The inspiration came from a jacket with a huge collar in the movie ‘Dune,’ ” West says. “Most sneakers focus on the tongue, so I wanted to do something different.” West knows whereof he speaks: he says he has no idea how many shoes he owns, but he does know that he routinely needs to send shipments off to storage. The LV-meets-Kanye kicks will be available at Louis Vuitton stores in June.... [read the full post]

The Auto Tune Explosion
Original at oghiphop.com
• Wed, Dec 24
By Carsten Kanye’s warbling, robotic voice comes courtesy of a studio trick that corrects the pitch of a vocalist (i.e. it forces the sound into key). Best known as “Auto-Tune,” the brand name of the software, the corrective tactic is the overused trend of the year, audible on Pop, R&B and Hip Hop songs up and down the charts. Once referred to as “the Cher effect” (the use of the trick on her hit “Believe” a decade ago was the first time most heard the sound), it is now often referenced as “the T Pain effect.” The hit singer/rapper/producer uses Auto-Tune as much as Jimi Hendrix used his guitar. Now there’s a trick I’d like to see T Pain pull off. [read the full post]

Consequence Signs New Deal, Kanye West & Q-Tip Are On The Job
Original at oghiphop.com

By Carsten This week, Queens rapper Consequence inked a deal with Universal/Motown Records and now he’s preparing to release his sophomore album which will be executive produced by Kanye West and Q-Tip. SOHH caught up with the Cons to discuss the upcoming LP. According to Consequence, West was very excited about prospect of swapping loops with Q-Tip. “For Kanye, even with him being a mega star, it’s still a high for him to do it because he’s a Tribe fan. He loves Tribe.” Consequence told SOHH that having Q-Tip and Ye onboard fufills his need for big name features though he did hint at a possible appearance by Jay-Z. Consequence battled Jigga in a game of Connect four during one of the first episodes of his Cons TV internet series. [read the full post]
Common: Universal Mind Control (Reviews)
Original at oghiphop.com
• Sun, Dec 7
By Carsten Also: The result is unashamedly hedonistic. Common has said, ‘I created this music for the summer; it’s about feeling good,’ and – seasonal anomaly aside – he’s bang on the button. Pharrell, Kanye, Cee-Lo and Santogold join the high-profile guest list, while Common shifts his lyrical focus from his brothers and the socio-economic blight that affects their communities to booty and bling. The heartfelt ‘Changes’ and ‘Inhale’ aside, this is Common as you’ve never heard him. It’s oddly shocking to hear him declare, ‘I’m gonna touch you where the sun don’t shine,’ (on ‘Sex 4 Suga’), or, ‘This is hip hop, baby,’ (‘Announcement’), because Common simply doesn’t do smut, strut or swagger. Until now. He’s very good at it. [read the full post]
