Johnny Cupcakes

This is my favorite brand on the market (ahem, beside Humanzee, of course) for a number of reasons. First and foremost among them is that the owner, colloquially known as Johnny Cupcakes, started this venture independently, and worked to create a brand that has never sold out, and reigns at the top of its realm.

Johnny’s career started when he dropped out of college after only a few weeks of attending classes. Between working part-time at a print shop and a comic book store, he was also in a growing punk rock band, ‘On Broken Wings’, with a few of his friends. He started his Johnny Cupcakes shirts during this time, selling them out of the comic book store, mainly. The venture took off when his band got signed, and he moved his merchandise while touring across the nation. Johnny Cupcakes eventually gained a solid following, and after leaving his band to focus on the business, it took off into the stratosphere. His brand sells all kinds of interesting things, has stores on both coasts, worldwide distribution, and, obviously, Johnny’s now a multi-millionaire.

The designs are cool and fresh, usually taking familiar pop culture images, and combining them with the ‘Cupcake’ ideology in some way. But the designs aren’t necessarily why I like this brand — it appeals to me because it represents everything I’d like to be. An independent person with an idea that, through some legitimate work, actually becomes a reality. There’s no way to not respect that.

Assuming you support the idea of people making their dreams happen, you need to go ahead and get on Johnny Cupcakes. And don’t look too far, because if you dig that, you’ll be supporting Humanzee, before long.

Lil Wayne

C’mon, man.

Before I go any further, this needs to be known — I am a proud Lil Wayne fan. He ranks inside my top 3 favorite hip-hop artists, alongside Kanye West and Kid Cudi. This dude’s flow is ridiculous, I’ve enjoyed nearly every song he’s put out since Go DJ, and Tha Carter II is one of the best hip-hop albums I’ve ever heard. Not to mention his huge role in the rebuilding of New Orleans after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina — he’s clearly got it in him to be a good person.

Now, let me also say this — this man is trippin. For all who don’t know, Lil Wayne was sentenced to at least 1 year in jail last week, for a gun possession incident that happened back in 2007 — he had a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun on his tour bus … okay.

I’m not Lil Wayne, and I don’t know what he does or does not need, so I can’t speak on whether that gun was necessary — also, this was a couple years ago, so maybe he’s changed as a person since then. However, what I do know, is that in life there are role models, and there are also people that these role models have the power to influence. The number of young people that look up to Wayne is probably higher than the number of fine ass celebrities Derek Jeter has been with — or at least close — and for that reason, he has a responsibility. Alot of high profile citizens will say that they didn’t ask to be role models … okay, that’s fine, but I didn’t ask to be black either, yet here I am. A big part of life is accepting the position you’re in, and accepting the desired and “not necessarily” desired parts of the role you may find yourself in, especially if your choices led you there. Maybe his time away will help him realize that he has alot of influence, and young people worldwide can benefit from him being someone that at least appears respectable.

Alright, that’s my look on this. He can’t be all bad though — lest we forget that he recruited this (unnecessarily fine) young lady to his team:

Lauren London^ … indeed

And to leave you with, a couple new Lil Wayne tracks for those who, like myself, actually enjoy this man’s music:

May you walk with God, man
