Madonna to help ring in New Year in Rio

BRASILIA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Singer and pop icon Madonna will give a concert in Rio de Janeiro this coming New Year's Eve, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes announced Friday.     The singer will perform at the famous Copacabana Beach, a mecca for more than 2 million partygoers every year. Madonna, who became famous with songs such as "Material Girl," arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Monday to request financial support for some social projects she is working on. On Thursday, the 51-year-old pop singer went to Sao Paulo to meet with a group of women in a poor community. Madonna talked about the positive values transmitted by the Kabbalah, of which she is a follower. Madonna will probably leave Brazil on Friday.
