Spirit was designed, along with its twin, Opportunity, to be a robotic geologist. The rovers have examined Martian rocks and soil, looking for telltale signs of water. Opportunity hit pay dirt when it found evidence that salty sea once stood in the area now called Meridiani Planum.
Spirit has been exploring a plateau called Home Plate where it discovered silica-rich soil earlier this year. Meanwhile, Opportunity is analyzing exposed rock layers inside a giant crater near the equator. NASA extends Mars rovers' mission Mars rovers takes the plunge into crater

Steve Squyres, lead Mars Exploration Rover scientist at Cornell University describes the atmosphere at NASA: "Many of us were pretty much reduced to incoherent babble… like 'WOW!!', 'Holy Toledo!' … in our e-mails to one another as the first good pictures were coming down."
Pathfinder was a technology demonstration mission," said John Callas, science manager for the Mars Exploration Rover mission. "The MER mission is very much a scientifically driven mission." That 39 minutes makes life really complicated," Squyres said.
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) is the size of a minibus, making it the biggest spacecraft to be sent to the Red Planet. The Phoenix Mars Scout, in search of organic chemicals, will be launched in 2007, and the Mars Science Laboratory will follow two years later.

LOS ANGELES – NASA says it has absolutely no plan to turn off either of the Mars Rovers because of budget cuts. NASA is saying Tuesday that it has rescinded a letter that recommended budget cuts in the Mars Rover program to cover the cost of a next-generation rover on the Red Planet.
The rovers' biggest accomplishment is uncovering geologic evidence that water once flowed on Mars. Spirit is currently studying rocks and soil samples near a Martian ridge while Opportunity is circling the rim of a massive crater for possible ways in.
Spinning wheels nearly thwarted the rover’s six-wheeled climb inside the stadium-sized Endurance crater. But it is expected to arrive within a robotic-arm’s length of a rock exposure dubbed Burns Cliff on Friday, where deep exposures of heavily layered bedrock are visible.

The Mars Exploration Rover team members are responsible for every aspect of the rovers' journey. Their reward will come when they receive digital postcards from Mars, as the rovers give scientists - and the public - new views and more detailed information about the red planet.
Where the Pathfinder mission consisted of a lander, with science instruments and camera, as well as the small Sojourner rover, the Mars 2003 mission features a design that is dramatically different. This new spacecraft will consist entirely of the large, long-range rover, which comes...
