By ComicList It's a real joy watching an artist's work improve with time. By ComicList The artwork is outstanding as always. With Big Daddy and Hit-Girl going through various iterations of disguises you would think the characters would drop some of their own similarities but this is not the case at all. The highlight of the issue is the shear brutality when the violence breaks out. Whether it’s compound fractions or sniper bullets to the head you’d be hard pressed to not be left with the impression that this comic knows its violence. No one does cliffhangers like Millar and this comic has a very good one. This issue was good but when juxtaposed against the others in the series it doesn’t quite hold the same high interest level. It does build two characters very well, but does it come at the expense of the lead character? If you like sho...   [read the full post]

By ComicList Green Hulk tries to convince red Hulk to join forces with him against those that set up the battle in the first place. However, red Hulk resists and mentions how he would never ally with green Hulk and green Hulk addresses the possibility that the red Hulk is just another offshoot of the Hulk, like grey Hulk had been. The comic appears to be catering to speculation by fans about exactly who the red Hulk is. I found this to be an interesting way of getting readers to chase their tails. The comic brings in even more characters by the end and it seems the upper hand is being gained by the Offenders. The motives of all the characters aren’t made obvious, but the involvement of some of them seem fairly expected to some degree. With the finale next issue I have no...   [read the full post]

Original at ComicList external link    Fri, Apr 24

By ComicList The story is good for a couple of reasons. First of all, it feels like it could take place in any number of decades, which keeps the continuity freaks guessing. Secondly, the story relies on Wolverine the man instead of the Avenger, Mutant or beast. The artwork is also excellent as it keeps Wolverine grounded as just a regular man. Finally, the story has a couple of nice twists in it. The story doesn’t quite connect 100% percent because of the infusion of the pirates. The pirates were the ones that left Wolverine dead in the ocean but then they come back looking for him, which doesn’t quite make a ton of sense. Also, the ending here is lifted directly from one of the Creepshow stories from the movies. I wasn’t crazy about that at all.   [read the full post]

Nearly ten years ago, Marvel Comics marketed a 12-issue comic book series entitled Marvel: The Lost Generation. I passed it by. Set in the Marvel Universe’s past, before the origin of the Fantastic Four took place, the story is the brainchild of long-time comics pro John Byrne, who wrote and drew the series. TLG takes several characters previously seen in Marvel stories, throws them in with quite a few dreamt up by Byrne, and gives readers a tale chock-full of well-done characterization and slam-bang superhero action.   [read the full post]

Wolverine decides to head out on his quest to find and stop them. The artwork is tremendous. I got the Kubert cover that pays homage to the Barry Windsor-Smith cover and it’s a fantastic remake. The art between the pages is brilliant in every way. The panel layouts that lead you to the action are effective and simple. The attitude and darkness that Wolverine shows as he finds out about the weapon x reproduction may be the best art in the comic. By ComicList Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk #4 of 6 Marvel Comics Lindelof, Yu & McCaig This issue primarily deals with She-Hulk. Actually, you could say it expands the characters of Jen Walters and Betty Ross and the results are She-Hulk. Normally you might find a comic where the two title characters are largely absent to be boring, especially in a short series, but this is not the case here. By ComicList Cable #13 Marvel Comics Swierczynski & Olivetti Another item worth noting is the discussion Cable and Wolverine have. Wolverine is explaining their trip into the future as a way of retrieving Cable and the baby because Cable failed at his task. Is that really the case though? How could Cyclops possibly know that Cable failed in his task, but was able to confirm that Cable was alive in the future? If Cyclops thought Cable to be a failure wouldn’t it make more sense to sick X-Force on Bishop and then on Cable? Especially seeing as how X-Force failed to detain Bishop the first time around. This has some explaining to do later but helps to keep the distrust among them all very high.   [read the full post]

By ComicList This was a good issue. There’s plenty of action, some mustache twisting sinister plans and a bit of a tricky ending. The comic helps bring Bucky around a little into embracing his new role as Captain America. As seen, he runs around this issue dressed as the Winter Soldier. He has an excuse as to why he is doing this, but it seems the real reason is he hasn’t yet fully accepted that he is now Captain America. Especially when dealing with some of the old Cap’s good friends like the Human Torch. The comic is moving away from the epic sweeping stories but it isn’t slowing down at all. This arc involved three characters (and one dead) that we hadn’t seen in the recent run of this series and used them very effectively. By ComicList The issue starts out with Rogue in a lot of trouble in the Danger Room sequence. Her only absorbed personality, Mystique, begins to take over to help her get out of trouble. This part of the comic works well because of the flashback explaining how this all possible when Rogue went to Beast after having this happen with the Ms Marvel persona. The remainder of the comic is spent with Xavier unraveling the Danger Room’s purpose and plan while Rogue continues to struggle through the sequence that seems to have been made entirely to mess with her head and destroy her. By ComicList X-Men Vs. Hulk and Hulk Vs. Fin Fang Foom - Both published by Marvel Publishing, 48 pages and $3.99. The first story in X-Men vs Hulk is a 22-page tale from the mutant team’s past. Logan (aka, Wolverine) sets up a “challenge” for teammate Colossus, by orchestrating a confrontation between the armored X-Man and The Hulk. And, it’s pretty much non-stop action from there. If all of that isn’t enough, X-Men vs Hulk is free of ads, to boot! Kudos to Marvel! Artist Jorge Lucas manages great emotion in his characters, superior detail and a style that is reminiscent of Jack Kirby. This book also contains a reprinted Marvel classic (Fin Fang Foom’s first appearance in Strange Tales #89) by Stan Lee and the aforementioned Kirby.   [read the full post]

Rate Wolverine #71 REVIEW

By ComicList The second half of the issue involves the plot. Hawkeye brings Logan in with him to deliver the goods to the mob. While, its not drugs, it is a form of a drug that Hawkeye ends up asking for some of from the mobsters he delivers it to. This sets off an interesting chain of events that leads to a very bloody ending to the comic. However, I wonder if all that happens in this issue is really enough to make Logan pop his claws. From what I’ve seen I would say no, but we’ll see. The artwork is tremendous. We get a lot of iconic images of familiar Marvel Universe characters. Some are corpses while others are just studying things from afar. The ending of the comic allows the art to really show off. There’s bloodshed and it’s not shy here.   [read the full post]

By ComicList In the latest installment of Uncanny X-Men we get a resolution to the Colossus sub-plot and a basic resolution to the Beast and Angel sub-plot but the real fun is about to begin with the big reveal at the issue’s end. While this title hasn’t been dealing with huge stories since Messiah Complex wrapped up over a year ago it has been a quality read month in and month out. I would think that we will begin to see more and more interesting things unfold as more players are put into place with each issue passing by. By ComicList Hulk Broken Worlds #1 of 2 Marvel Comics Van Lente, Henry, Thomas, Trimpe, Benjamin, Latorre, David & Buchemi Finally, we have the story from Benjamin and Latorre from the 2099 story. Unfortunately I never read the 2099 story so this was tough to get into right from the beginning. The story involves a Hulk that is not Banner and really the plot is more about corruption and deception than about the Hulk. The most memorable part of this comic was the art. The pencils create an interesting mosaic of colors and shapes that have faces pop out of them until the Hulk shows up and the art goes to a different level. The art definitely captured a dream like state in the story.   [read the full post]

By ComicList The style of the series has been to tell the story out of order and it makes it very unpredictable and lot of fun. This issue is no different as it jumps around the timeline two or three times. It begins with Wolverine playing out some scenes in his mind, some of which have “happened” while others have yet to occur in the series. Hulk and Wolverine then meet up at Wolverine’s legs and begin to discuss which leg Hulk should eat. The dialogue is brilliant as Wolverine appears to be the idiot and Hulk is the mildly professor type. This comic has some great dialogue, a lot of one-sided action and some interesting storytelling in it. It’s a good issue but not a great one. Captain America, as Winter Soldier in this issue, find himself outsmarted and in a heap of trouble. We get a taste of what the mad scientist has up his sleeve and things are looking fairly dire for Bucky and friends. It’s a great issue that gives a pair of excellent cliffhangers. The only thing that I found this issue to be lacking was the leash that Bucky has here. I mean, he’s Captain America, in China, running around out of uniform with allies that may or may not be approved by his organization. I found myself wondering who exactly had dispatched Black Widow after him as well as where is the people who initially had the Human Torch’s body. It’s a tedious, but I felt like a little blurb about this would have gone a long way.   [read the full post]

The Hulk At A Crossroads In issue 300, Doctor Strange banished the Hulk from Earth, as he had become a creature no longer under the influence of Bruce Banner’s persona, and was totally given to unrestrained rage and murderous destruction. Marvel’s “Master of The Mystic Arts”, placed the Hulk at a dimensional crossroads, the “doorstep” of many different worlds. Here, it was believed, the Hulk could do no harm and no harm would come to him. Well, one outta two ain’t bad. By ComicList This comic centers squarely on the Holocaust. It’s graphic but not too vulgar. It paints as realistic of a picture as it can when dealing with a horrific historic event in a comic book. To be fair, this comic has little to do with the X-Men, heroes, capes, villains and super powers. It takes a major player and drops him, as a child, in the worst documented atrocities seen made against mankind in the twentieth century. This issue was disturbing but very good. This comic is for history buffs that might also like the X-Men. This story presents the Holocaust in a respectful manner and doesn’t try to turn into a super-hero thing at all. The ending creates so many questions I wouldn’t even know where to begin. But that’s the beauty of this series.
