Tuesday, March 3, 2009 --=[ Prince 7 ]=-- Prince - Crystal Ball [4Cd Set][1998] In early 1998, Prince (who at the time went by an unpronounceable symbol) released Crystal Ball, a four-disc set containing a three CD compilation album of the same name featuring a much anticipated collection of "previously bootlegged" material, with The Truth, a bonus disc of 12 new acoustic songs. Internet pre-orders included an instrumental album, Kamasutra. Call him what you want--Prince, O(+>, TAFKAP, or the Artist: If this massive collection--three archival CDs and a fourth "unplugged" disc--proves anything, it's that music, not his name, is the reason we should still care about Funkytown's most famous musical exponent. Crystal Ball contains moments of unfettered brilliance, including furious jams ("Acknowledge Me," "Interactive," "Da Bang"), sexadelic funk ("Tell Me How U Wanna B Done") and unexpected hilarity ("Movie Star"). There's filler, too, like the mindnumbing vamp "Cloreen Bacon Skin" and the Broadway miscue "Strays of the World," but overall, this set is valuable if only as a rare glimpse inside the little guy's throne room during the height of his purple reign. Limited import quantities found of this 4CD set released in 1998 and currently out of print domestically. Thirty one tracks in all including 'Dream Factory', 'Lovesign', 'Da Bang', 'Crucial', '18 & Over', 'Get Loose' & 'Goodbye'. Prince - Kamasutra [1997] Kamasutra is an instrumental album by The NPG Orchestra released in 1998, a pseudonym of Prince. The album was written to be played during Prince's wedding to Mayte in 1996. All the tracks are instrumentals, ranging from classical music, jazz and experimentations with various sounds. For example, the track "Cutz" uses the sound of scissors snipping as its basis. One of the tracks, "The Plan" was previewed in an excerpt on the 1996 3-CD set Emancipation. Prince & The New Power Generation - The Love Symbol Album [1992] The Love Symbol Album has some of the finest, most inventive music of Prince's career. The 13th studio album by Prince and the New Power Generation, colloquially referred to as the Love Symbol or as O(+>. It was released as a double vinyl or single CD, on October 13, 1992. The New Power Generation is the most talented and versatile band Prince has ever fronted, and they fulfill their potential on The Love Symbol Album. Although the NPG factored heavily on Diamonds and Pearls, it still sounded like a solo Prince album. Symbol sounds like a band performing together, working off of each other's strengths and weaknesses. The album's first two singles, "My Name Is Prince," and "Sexy M.F.," were only minor hits on the US pop charts, though both made top ten in the UK. Conversely, the third single, "7," was relatively unsuccessful in the UK, but was a top ten hit in the US. This album was considered Prince's last mainstream effort as far as sales and visibility went, until the release of Musicology in 2004, reaching #1 in the UK. The album was originally conceived as a rock-soap opera with various spoken segues throughout. However, in a last-minute attempt to add an additional song, most of the segues had to be cut for album length. The few that remained were somewhat confusing in context. The album also debuts Mayte Garcia, who also plays a part in the album's storyline, and would become Prince's wife in 1996. In a dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, Prince decided to change his stage name to the album's eponymous symbol. He kept that name for several years until re-adopting the Prince moniker in 2000.
