By David Friedman 1) Phoenix Suns (8 points): Two MVP candidates--Steve Nash (2005 winner, 2006 winner, 2007 runner-up), Shaquille O'Neal (2005 runner-up); four All-Stars--Nash (2005-08), Amare Stoudemire (2005, 2007-08), O'Neal (2005-07), Grant Hill (2005). 2-4) San Antonio Spurs (5): One MVP candidate--Tim Duncan (fourth in 2005 and fourth in 2007); three All-Stars--Duncan (2005-08), Tony Parker (2006-07), Manu Ginobili (2005). Comment: Duncan won the regular season MVP in 2002 and 2003, plus he won the Finals MVP in 1999, 2003 and 2005. Parker won the Finals MVP in 2007 (Carlisle specifically mentioned Parker as an MVP caliber player due to this accomplishment). Michael Finley is a valuable reserve who made the All-Star team in 2000 and 2001. [read the full post]
MVP/RoY Rankings, Part X

By David Friedman 7-Dwight Howard: There is a perception that his game his fallen off--and he did have a subpar game versus Cleveland on Saturday--but he averaged 19.6 ppg and 14.5 rpg as Orlando went 10-4 in March, securing the third seed in the East. 6-Kevin Garnett: His numbers are diminished because the Celtics win a lot of blowouts but he is a major reason that Boston has become a defensive juggernaut. 5-Tim Duncan: Often overlooked since his two MVP seasons, Duncan has the Spurs in contention for the best record in the West. 4-Amare Stoudemire: He has been getting a lot of mention as an MVP candidate since his scoring numbers took off but until his defense improves I can't place him ahead of Duncan and Garnett. Knicks, Spurs, foreign players and the NBA draft

Look at the Spurs roster, and think about where these players came from. The Spurs currently have four players that were drafted by them that are still on the roster, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli, Tony Parker and Ian Mahinmi. Why would anyone want to follow this recipe to build a team? It would onl...

By David Friedman 6-Kevin Garnett: His individual statistics are not eye-popping but he has helped to completely change the team culture of the Celtics. 5-Tim Duncan: The Spurs hit a couple bumps in the road but Duncan is still the key to everything they do offensively and defensively. 4-Tracy McGrady: His scoring, passing and ability to draw double teams helped Houston put together a historic winning streak. When he is healthy, he does those three things nearly as well as Kobe and LeBron do but he has not been as healthy or productive as they have throughout the entire season. 2-Dirk Nowitzki: His numbers are solid but something seems to be missing in Dallas. By FLCeltsFan Here are comments found around the Mavs boards during their game with the Celtics. Official GDT: Celts and KG the "Tanker" @ Dallas Mavs There is no way possible we lose to Boston; they just are not that good. The only way they beat us last time is because we were without Harris...oh, wait... Celtics fan) Not sure if you are being sarcastic. But We beat you without KG last time. A PF is not as important as a PG. I.E. Spurs win more without Duncan than thay do without Parker. Harris was more important to us than KG was to you! Who won that game for you? Rondo!!!!!!!!!! If you only had Eddie House, you think you would have won even with KG? No way in hell! Especially if we had Harris! Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!] [read the full post]

By FLCeltsFan This is the best I've seen from the Spurs all year. 28-11 After the first. I love seeing Tim Duncan work the post and muscle past KG.......... The Spurs are shooting 57% from the field and from 3pt land, while the Celtics are shooting only 23% from the field and 0% from 3pt land. Big Baby is a rebounding beast. Cassel keeping Celtics in the game. He's on fire Can we swap Finley for Cassell straight up? Bad third quarter by the Spurs. They really need to pick up the slack. Please beat Boston! Sean... What a homer... Not as bad as Tommy nonetheless I find it hilarious how the C's board has been talking **** about our announcers. Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!] [read the full post]

By dberri The top two players on this team - Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili - are essentially unchanged from last season. The third most productive player this season, Fabricio Oberto, is much improved from 2006-07. So obviously Duncan, Ginobili, and Oberto are not the problem.

By Kinnon Yee In my mind, until somebody knocks off the Spurs, they are still the team to beat in the West. There’s been plenty of talk about them getting old, but they are still a team tied for the best record in the West (with the Lakers), they still have Tim Duncan in the middle and Manu and Parker on the wing...

By David Friedman Manu Ginobili has been playing really well for the past month or so and whenever that happens it is inevitable that certain people will pipe up to suggest that Ginobili is nearly as valuable as Kobe Bryant. There are a number of problems with that theory, not the least of which is that the season lasts for 82 games, not one month; those who wonder why Ginobili was "snubbed" in this year's All-Star voting may want to look at what his numbers were when those votes were cast and when the coaches selected the reserves. In any case, as Popovich said, Duncan is the hub of the Spurs; Tony Parker does not win the 2007 Finals MVP without Duncan attracting a lot of defensive attention (and shutting down the Cavs' offense in the paint, sparking numerous fast b... By FLCeltsFan The Celtics out rebounded the Spurs 46-37. They had 18 fast break points to none for the Spurs. In spite of being undersized, The Celtics outscored the Spurs in the paint 30-26. The Celtics shot 47% and held the Spurs to 44% shooting. The one stat that stands out is that the Celtics shot 34 free throws to only 13 for the Spurs. This was a very satisfying win. The Celtics are now 16-0 against the Western Conference teams. They still have to face the Hornets and Suns but there should be no question that they are for real, with or without Kevin Garnett. The Celtics are 4 -2 without him in the lineup. When he comes back, he will be motivated all over again and I expect the Celtics to go on a tear through the league. But for now, this win sure feels good. [read the full post]

By FLCeltsFan FL's Take: The Celtics had a huge monkey on their backs with an 18 game losing streak to the Spurs. It was like rubbing salt in the wounds because the Celtics were supposed to get Duncan after their 15 win season in 1997. But, last season they finally broke that string and won in San Antonio. Pierce got his first win against San Antonio. Duncan got his first loss to the Celtics. If last season's team could beat the Spurs, this season's team should be able to, even without KG. I am worried about Perk being out as well, though. It makes us very undersized against their big front line. Scal is definitely not the answer against Duncan. Powe and Baby would both have to have huge games and Pierce and Allen will have to snap out of their doldrums for the Celtics to pull... [read the full post]

By Michael A. De Leon But for Cleveland, they live and die by LeBron. While they have other key role players in Larry Hughes and an emerging Daniel Gibson, it’s pretty much a one-man show for the Cavs while the Spurs come at you with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili off the bench. The key for the Spurs will be...
