Today I drove to the Kent farmhouse and presented Clark with a sword. I'm still not sure he got the symbolism even though I stroked it a lot. Afterwards I got kidnapped and nearly died but I woke up nicely rested in the Smallville General Hospital. Clark gave me a concerned lecture--very sweet!...

It’s the same thing here. Over the course of the episode: Chloe kills Tess, a Kandorian kills Chloe, Zod kills Clark, and a swarm of Kandorians (probably) kills Oliver. Metropolis is mostly destroyed, and the only hope in saving the world is changing the past.
