Truthiness, on the other hand, might be. Wired.com caught up with the two comics rascals, long before they had their morning coffee, to talk Colbert, Spidey, the 2008 election and why Quesada won&apos;t work blue. The Colbert issue of Amazing Spider-Man hits streets Oct. 15.

Marvel has always been open to daffy gimmicks like this -- hey this is the company built by Stan Lee, after all.

It was much more subtle back in the Summer of Love, 1967, when Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon popped in a true classic, &quot; The Amazing Spider-Man&quot; issue No. 50.

<title>Spider-Man With Great Power REVIEW</title>

I&#8217;ve always been a sucker for the classic Marvel characters, as portrayed in their infancy by the likes of Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, and the rest of the Silver Age Marvel crew. But no character has intrigued me more than Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. That&#8217;s why I had to check out Marvel&#8217;s recent 5-issue miniseries, Spider-Man: With Great Power.

Not a re-telling so much as an expansion on the classic origin, Spider-Man: WGP takes place between the time Peter gets bitten by that infamous radioactive spider (&#8220;genetic super spider&#8221; for those who have only seen the movie) and his Uncle Ben&#8217;s untimely demise.

Spider-Man then asks the bartender where the Bookie lives. Spider-Man threatens to destroy the bar costing the bartender thousands of dollars in damage. The bartender then gives Spider-Man an address. Spider-Man leaves and the bartender then places a phone call to someone that Spider-Man is on his way.

The Bad: The fact remains that Amazing Spider-Man is not actually a part of the Marvel Adventures line of comic books. At least, it is not officially a part of the Marvel Adventures titles. This has been my biggest criticism of this &#8220;new&#8221; Amazing Spider-Man. I don&#8217;t mind all-ages stories. That is exactly the role of the Marvel Adventure titles.

As always, Bendis writes a fantastic Spider-Man. I am a huge fan of Bendis&#8217; work on Ultimate Spider-Man. And Ultimate Spider-Man is pretty much the only Ultimate Universe title worth reading anymore. Actually, since the Ultimate Universe is wilting away into nothing I would rather have Marvel place Bendis on Amazing Spider-Man and let him work his magic on that title. Amazing Spider-Man with its constantly spinning carousel of writers has been an inconsistent read since the Mephisto re-boot. I think Bendis would be Marvel&#8217;s best shot of returning Spider-Man back to his former glory and his rightful place as Marvel&#8217;s flagship title.

Peter goes to a janitor closet and slips into his Spider-Man costume. Peter notices that he still only has one of his web-shooters. Spider-Man starts web-slinging across Manhattan looking for the mugger wearing a Spider-Man mask.

If you had the hankering to read about the down on his luck teenage Peter Parker who is living the single life then you could pick up an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man. If you were in the mood to read about the married adult Peter with a more stable grasp on his life then you could snag an issue of Amazing Spider-Man. Now, your choice is a loser single Peter in his twenties or loser single Peter in his teen years.

Spider-Woman mentions how these Skrulls are more advanced and not even Wolverine or Daredevil could tell by scent that Electra was a Skrull. Of course, Spider-Woman re-iterates the fact that the New Avengers all think that Tony is a Skrull.

Ares is enamored with Spider-Woman and wants to nail her. Ms. Marvel confronts Tony that she really isn&#8217;t the team leader. Tony responds that she is. (I have to go with Ms. Marvel on this one.) Spider-Woman is sad that her good friend Ms. Marvel isn&#8217;t happy that she is back.

Commander Hill then alerts Tony to the fact that Venom symbiotes are running amok in New York City. The Avengers assemble. End of issue.

We see J. Jonah Jameson on the news report debating how Spider-Man is a total menace. The news anchor comments how Spider-Man hasn&#8217;t been seen for months. That J.J.&#8217;s paper made all its money from its Spider-Man coverage and without any Spidey stories its circulation has plummeted. J.J. barks &#8220;No comment!&#8221;

Peter then tells Charlie that he is going to follow the mugger in order to take a picture for the Bugle. Charlie thinks that Peter is an idiot. Peter is about to change into his Spider-Man outfit when he realizes that being Spider-Man just makes J. Jonah Jameson more money and Peter isn&#8217;t about to do that. So, Peter decides to handle it as himself.

And maybe it is just me, but I completely fail to see what Joey Q is trying to accomplish by erasing Peter and MJ&#8217;s marriage. Peter has grown and evolved over the years. The marriage between Peter and MJ represents the natural growth of Peter&#8217;s character. I thought that the entire purpose of the Ultimate Spider-Man title was to give readers that young Spider-Man free of all the complex history of the 616 Universe Spider-Man as well as the marriage between Peter and MJ. If Joey Q wanted so desperately to read a Spider-Man story where Peter is single then pick up a damn issue of Ultimate Spider-Man.

Synopsis: We begin with Peter at Aunt May&#8217;s bedside. We cut to the nurse on duty taking some of Aunt May&#8217;s blood and getting a report done on the analysis of the blood. Peter manages to get his hands on the blood test report and is upset. Evidently, Aunt May has built up an immunity to his spider-blood and that the transfusion he conducted isn&#8217;t going to do anything for Aunt May.

Peter leaves the hospital thinking about the nine felony counts that he has just committed in the past hour. And that these felonies were committed by Peter Parker and not Spider-Man. That Peter&#8217;s fingerprints are all over everything. That Peter has become everything that he set out to fight. A criminal.

The Revolution always enjoys the latest issue of Ultimate Spider-Man. Bendis is tacos in the bank on this title. Ultimate Spider-Man #111 was Mark Bagley&#8217;s final issue. The fact that Bendis and Bagley cranked out a run of 111 issues together is absolutely mind blowing. You just don&#8217;t see that in the modern age of comic books. Anyway, I&#8217;m sure that Ultimate Spider-Man #112 will be a good read. Let&#8217;s do this review.

Comments

The Good: Ultimate Spider-Man #112 was a decidedly average read. And I&#8217;m simply not used to getting pedestrian reads on Ultimate Spider-Man. Ever since Ultimate Spider-Man #1, this title has been a stunningly consistent read each and every month.
