By Brian Cronin A great many thanks to Robert L. Patten, for his excellent scholarship on this topic. As many comic book fans know, both Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby took major umbrage at the way that Stan Lee was given practically all the credit for Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, etc. Even today, artists chaf...

Spider-Man With Great Power REVIEW

I’ve always been a sucker for the classic Marvel characters, as portrayed in their infancy by the likes of Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, and the rest of the Silver Age Marvel crew. But no character has intrigued me more than Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. That’s why I had to check out Marvel’s recent 5-issue miniseries, Spider-Man: With Great Power. Not a re-telling so much as an expansion on the classic origin, Spider-Man: WGP takes place between the time Peter gets bitten by that infamous radioactive spider (“genetic super spider” for those who have only seen the movie) and his Uncle Ben’s untimely demise. By Alan Kistler GREG WEISMAN: When I got the job, I went and bought the first seven volumes of The Essential Spider-Man and re-read them. I’d read them as a kid, I grew up on Stan Lee and John Romita, Sr. and later went back and read the original Stan Lee, Steve Ditko stories. So, I re-read them and took copious not...
Comics' Greatest Enigma, by Mike Gold

By Mike Gold I think from the commercial perspective Steve Ditko’s role in the success of Marvel Comics and its transcendence to the college-student market has been severely underrated. It was The Amazing Spider-Man that put Marvel on the map and in the college bookstores. It was Spider-Man that beca...

By Brian Cronin This is a tough one, because it’s not exactly like Deadpool is some great classic comic book title, and it certainly is not in the same realm of quality of Lee/Ditko Spider-Man or Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four (or any number of other titles), but Deadpool #11 not only stands out as a strong indiv...

Library of Congress Receives Original Drawings For Amazing Fantasy #15
Original at ComicList
• Thu, May 1
By ComicList In a deed of superheroic proportions, an anonymous donor has given the Library of Congress the original artwork by Steve Ditko for Marvel Comics' "Amazing Fantasy #15" -- the comic book that introduced Spider-Man in August 1962. The black-and-white, large-format drawings (21 x 15 inches) detail the transformation of high school bookworm Peter Parker into Spider-Man. He is bitten by a radioactive spider, discovers his new powers and develops his now well-known disguise. The first episode concludes with several of the most famous lines attached to the story of Spider-Man: "With great power there must also come great responsibility ... and so a legend is born and a new name is added to the roster of those who make the world of fantasy the most... By Richard von Busack Beside this, it seems that Sam Raimi is trying to channel certain silent movie ideas in his Spider-Man series. Peter Parker must have been based by Steve Ditko on the figure of Harold Lloyd, eager bespectacled kid that he is. It's easy to juxtapose the climb up the tower in Lloyd's Safety Last...
