Writers David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky present readers with a post-Great Depression world in which the poor are victimized by the rich, and the rich are controlled by the criminal underworld. It is a dark vision, to be sure, but not entirely without merit. A young Peter Parker, inspired by his Aunt May (an outspoken figure who is a thorn in the establishment’s side), is not afraid to spit in the eye of the outlaw element. His desire is to help usher in an age of equality for all classes. Let’s hope he lives long enough. Thor hacks his way through a seemingly unending onslaught of minions. Suddenly, Captain America appears on the scene and helps Thor in his fight. Thor asks Captain America how it is possible that he is here in Valhalla. Captain America replies that he does not know and that they will figure it out once they are done with this battle. I cannot wait to see how Loeb manages to make Nick Fury so important to the Ultimate Universe that this type of cataclysmic event can only be solved by returning Nick to the Ultimate Universe. Maybe Loeb can turn this plotline into something engrossing, but at this point I am just not seeing it.

Comic Book Review: New Avengers #41: Secret Invasion

Spider-Man mentions that Captain America said that he thought there was some rebellious faction in SHILED trying to kill the Avengers. Evidently, Captain America felt there was something rotten going on with SHIELD. Spider-Man then says that the Skrulls were mining vibranium here and then tried to kill the Avengers here. The ending to New Avengers #41 was a total miss for me. That is because I find the plotline involving the 1970’s Captain America to be completely lacking in drama or intrigue. We know that the 1970’s Captain America is a Skrull. We have seen Steve’s dead body over on Captain America after he was killed by Sharon Carter. I find this 1970’s Captain America plotline a bit of a waste of time.

Spider-Man starts web-slinging across Manhattan looking for the mugger wearing a Spider-Man mask. If you had the hankering to read about the down on his luck teenage Peter Parker who is living the single life then you could pick up an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man. If you were in the mood to read about the married adult Peter with a more stable grasp on his life then you could snag an issue of Amazing Spider-Man. Now, your choice is a loser single Peter in his twenties or loser single Peter in his teen years.

Spider-Woman mentions how these Skrulls are more advanced and not even Wolverine or Daredevil could tell by scent that Electra was a Skrull. Of course, Spider-Woman re-iterates the fact that the New Avengers all think that Tony is a Skrull. Ares is enamored with Spider-Woman and wants to nail her. Ms. Marvel confronts Tony that she really isn’t the team leader. Tony responds that she is. (I have to go with Ms. Marvel on this one.) Spider-Woman is sad that her good friend Ms. Marvel isn’t happy that she is back. Commander Hill then alerts Tony to the fact that Venom symbiotes are running amok in New York City. The Avengers assemble. End of issue.

MJ and Peter are back at the hotel room where Aunt May got shot. MJ is in the bathroom getting sick. MJ tells Peter that Aunt May had a good long life. That everyone dies at some point. That maybe they should let her go. Peter counters that he would agree with MJ if Aunt May died from old age. But, she didn’t. Aunt May died taking a bullet meant for Peter. That he can’t live with that guilt. And maybe it is just me, but I completely fail to see what Joey Q is trying to accomplish by erasing Peter and MJ’s marriage. Synopsis: We begin with Peter at Aunt May’s bedside. We cut to the nurse on duty taking some of Aunt May’s blood and getting a report done on the analysis of the blood. Peter manages to get his hands on the blood test report and is upset. Evidently, Aunt May has built up an immunity to his spider-blood and that the transfusion he conducted isn’t going to do anything for Aunt May. Peter leaves the hospital thinking about the nine felony counts that he has just committed in the past hour. And that these felonies were committed by Peter Parker and not Spider-Man. That Peter’s fingerprints are all over everything. That Peter has become everything that he set out to fight. A criminal.

The Revolution always enjoys the latest issue of Ultimate Spider-Man. Bendis is tacos in the bank on this title. Ultimate Spider-Man #111 was Mark Bagley’s final issue. The fact that Bendis and Bagley cranked out a run of 111 issues together is absolutely mind blowing. You just don’t see that in the modern age of comic books. Anyway, I’m sure that Ultimate Spider-Man #112 will be a good read. Let’s do this review. Comments The Good: Ultimate Spider-Man #112 was a decidedly average read. And I’m simply not used to getting pedestrian reads on Ultimate Spider-Man. Ever since Ultimate Spider-Man #1, this title has been a stunningly consistent read each and every month.
