Don Hany makes a great guest star, too. Supernatural. Season 5, Episode 1. "Sympathy for the Devil" Lucifer is out! Mark Pellegrino makes a strong impression as a character called Nick who is approached/tempted by Lucifer, while the boys adjust to the aftermath of what happened in the old convent. Good opening episode, which maintains the momentum of the story from the previous season. The Office. Season 6, Episode 6. "The Lover" Michael is dating Pam's mom. The Six Million Dollar Man. Misha Collins (the best thing to happen to this show since Jim Beaver) takes center stage and we get to see inside the life of the man that Castiel is possessing. The ending of the episode, however, in which Dean and Bobby confront Sam is superb for completely different reasons... Parks And Recreation. Season 2, Episode 1. "Pawnee Zoo" Gay marriage. While their characters are deeper and more layered than ever before, it's obvious that they have swapped places from their roles in the pilot. Sam is now the dark, agressive one while Dean wants nothing more than to live the life of a normal person. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are doing their best ever work as we watch the boys talk about these issues and in any of the scenes where we see Sam's gradual seduction over to the dark side, and it's impact on their relationship.   [read the full post]

Richard Libertini is sadly underused, but Barry Bostwick and John Rubinstein carry the episode, appearing in more episodes than the Winchesters. There's even a solid surprise cameo from Michael Weston. When I first saw him, I totally didn't get the casting. But, knowing that he is the real-life son of John Rubinstein, it makes perfect sense. I feel as if I have missed an episode of Supernatural. The narrative device (of making me think I was watching a TV show) created a distance between myself and Sam and Dean that I wasn't happy with. I feel like I wasn't 'with them' on this one. In fact, they were more like 'guest stars' in this one than main stars. And I hated it. I tune in to be with Sam and Dean on their adventures. Supernatural. Season 3, Episode 7. "Fresh Blood" Stronger than recent episodes. Gordon Walker is out of prison and out to get Sam... dead. A vampire called Dixon enters the picture and - before long - Gordon has become a creature of the night. He's not lost his sense of self, however, and he determines to end his own life... after he kills Sam. So the stage is set for a show-down between the Winchesters and a super-powered Gordon Walker. Sloppy writing, with regard to the climax, but this is a better episode than many recent ones.   [read the full post]

"The Legend of Merle McQuoddy" This time out the case-of-the-week is as strong and interesting as the ongoing storyline. This current run of episodes has been the highlight of the series so far. Supernatural. Season 3, Episode 6. "Red Sky at Morning" A very weak episode that finds the boys going up against the ghost of a vengeful sailor. It's another one of those goofy story ideas, in which future victims see a huge ghostly sailing ship hours before they die, but that is not why it fails to entertain. It's a dud because Bela sucks and none of the comedy works.   [read the full post]

"Bedtime Stories" This is goofy story. You really have to take a leap of faith to accept this one. But I love stories like this. She-Wolf Of London did an episode somewhat like this, and Kolchak's later episodes were "out there" too. On stories like this, I really admire the creativity of the writers. Sam goes up against the demon that did the deal with Dean. And, in a very cold blooded way, he kills her. Hmm... Highlight? I feel for her: the outsider, trying to fit in and forever a victim of her past. She does the wrong thing at the end of this story, but I understand why she did it. Supernatural. Season 3, Episode 4. "Sin City" Sasha Barrese is yet another beautiful-beyond-belief guest star, the story is more low key than usual and it's fascinating to see the reversal that's happened between the brothers (Dean mellowed, Sam bloodthirsty), but... this is one of the weakest episodes in a while. Ned is rather grumpy for the duration of this episode and Lee Pace has a field day with the role. He's hilarious. Anna Friel gets to shine, too, when Chuck tries out various accents and constantly bombards her real mother with phone calls from 'strangers'. With a storyline closely tied to Ned's family background this episode feels less like a case-of-the-week and is all the better for it. Highlight? I admire the way this show can take standard stories of sci-fi/fantasy and bring them into it's own narrowly-defined mythos. When they were able to do the Zombies overrun the town plot and make it work I came to the conclusion that they can make any story work on Supernatural. But the episode is not about Sam, it's about Dean. It's about what he wants and - in the end - it's about what he fears. Highlight? Supernatural (No contest. The case-of-the-week is so-so, and the twist is the exact same as one the pulled in Season Three, but this one introduces us to Gibbs' ex-wife and shows that his relationship with Hollis Mann is alive and well (I like this character and enjoy her relationship with Gibbs). Kaitlin Olson is hilarious in this episode. When her character gets drunk and passes herself off as a health inspector it is pretty much the highlight of the episode. By podcast@mail2tv.com (RikerDonegal) 05.30 Blood Ties 06.30 Kyle XY 07.30 Supernatural Supernatural seems, late in this second season, to be finding it's funny bone. And Dean, much like Fox Mulder before him, is the target of a lot of that. Deciding to make the show's most tragic/heroic character a figure of fun is undertaking a dangerous balancing act but the series (and the actor) pulls it off with no strain. Dean is frakkin' hilarious. He's such a goofball and I love him. Betraying his fanboy roots when face-to-face with a modern scream queen. It seems right, somehow, that this kid who knows nothing of pop culture would have found time to devote his free time to the world of low-budget horror flicks.   [read the full post]

His character is just what the show needs (not that stupid bar!). The actor brings to life the sort of no-nonsense character who would never believe in all this supernatural crap. Consequently, his presence makes everything else in the show seem more real. The two women in the bar, and the computer geek, are prime examples of bad television stereotypes. But a character like Bobby Singer, as the hero in a fantasy show? Nah, you don't see that very often. This is the funny episode of Supernatural. They tried this before (Season 1, Episode 17) and I hated it. It made things silly, and compromised the world of Supernatural.   [read the full post]

The case-of-the-week is still corny, but most of the episode is devoted to the regulars and their backstory. And a good one it is. The blood-drenched cliff-hanger (flash-forward) really shocked me, and I'll be back for more episodes. Supernatural. Season 2, Episode 14. "Born Under a Bad Sign" Back on form, the show delivers one of it's best-ever episodes. It's a two-hander (hardly anyone else appears in the story) and it's an acting tour-de-force for both men. Jared Padalecki gets to play real Sam (briefly), fake Sam and bad-ass demon. He looks like he is having a ton of fun in all three parts.
