By noreply@blogger.com (RikerDonegal) Harry O. "Such Dust as Dreams Are Made On" Mixed bag. While there are elements of greatness here, there is no real indication of the great television series that would follow and I can understand why this (first) pilot was not picked up in 1973. What makes this worth watching (and re-watching) is the central performance of David Janssen as Harry Orwell: the actor is superb and the script gives him a superb character to play with. Orwell is more world weary than any other private eye that television has given us, and Janssen ensures that this is conveyed by every word and gesture that the detective makes. He rides the bus, has a bullet lodged in him and is more of a womanizer than other TV heroes. But he's all the more real for it. The story is good but meand... [read the full post]

By RikerDonegal(noreply@blogger.com) The Closer. Season 4, Episode 7. "Sudden Death" A very sad episode (and a great performance from Raymond Cruz) as the brother of one of the best dressed cops on TV gets shot down in the street near his house. The episode tells a good story and delivers are lot of great moments for several of the characters. It's one of those outings where we get to observe the whole team in a moment of crisis and it's fascinating to watch how everyone reacts to Sanchez and to see who reaches out to him and how. The Closer has a great ensemble, but it's not an ensemble show and episodes like this make me wish that it was. Highlight? By Lisa My second pick is barely a second pick, more like a tied for first pick, is Kyra Sedgwick (Brenda in The Closer). Even with the great writing and directing on the show, a lesser actress would have given us a one dimensional Brenda bordering on a cliché. Kyra Sedgwick has made Brenda so real and complex, my feelings as a viewer for her character are real and complex. The writing, directing, cast – everything about the show is award worthy, but the show was appropriately named The Closer, because in the end the show is what it is because of Kyra’s Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson. Drama Series – I’m going with Lost. I enjoy both Boston Legal and House, but last season of Lost was incredible. [read the full post]

Why I love The Closer
Original at Lisa's
• Tue, Sep 9
By Lisa As the investigation moves forward, we see glimmers of our feisty Brenda Leigh. She's pissed. We also get a great scene with the coroner. All the coroners on this show are weird, and so far this weirdo is my favorite. I so love when he tries to flirt with Gabriel, especially since he's getting more overt, and Gabriel has finally caught on and gotten uncomfortable. Then there's the sponge ... the wipes ... how many times did Gabriel wipe himself off that day? Loved Brenda with the priest, Brenda with her squad, and what about Brenda with Pope, Taylor and the reporter ... Hi, I'm Brenda and I'm now in charge of every criminal investigation. All shall work for me. We go from the demise of priority homicide to the rise of this major case squad - lots of new potenti... [read the full post]

By Lisa Loved The Closer this week: Dial M for Provenza. After all the intensity so far this season, it was kind of fun to have such a light episode and I LOVE Jennifer Coolidge, the guest star as the woman trying to kill her husband. She’s always funny. One of the best scenes was at the end with Provenza and Pope and watching them bond over their settlements. I would have liked to have seen a little more Fritz, but at least he got a couple of good lines in early on and then there’s his killer smile. Do they still do synchronized swimming?
