The Emmy Awards are this Sunday. My first pick is for Steve Carell to take the Emmy for lead actor in a comedy series (Michael Scott in The Office). He is deeply funny and makes Michael both lovable and believable. There is no one in his category that is comparable.
My second pick is barely a second pick, more like a tied for first pick, is Kyra Sedgwick (Brenda in The Closer). Even with the great writing and directing on the show, a lesser actress would have given us a one dimensional Brenda bordering on a cliché. Kyra Sedgwick has made Brenda so real and complex, my feelings as a viewer for her character are real and complex. The writing, directing, cast – everything about the show is award worthy, but the show was appropriately named The Closer, because in the end the show is what it is because of Kyra’s Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson.
Comedy Series has to go to The Office. It is the funniest show on television and one of the best comedies of all time.
Drama Series – I’m going with Lost. I enjoy both Boston Legal and House, but last season of Lost was incredible.
Lead Actor Drama – Hugh Laurie (Dr. Gregory House in House). I would be okay with James Spader getting it for Alan Shore in Boston Legal, but I think it should go to Hugh Laurie. Besides, I have a dysfunctional crush on Dr House.
Jon Stewart and The Daily Show for all nominated categories.
Finally, I didn’t know until just recently that there is an Emmy Award for Outstanding Commercial. The eTrade baby wasn’t even nominated. Robbed!!! Come on Emmy nominating people – the baby underestimated the creepiness. The Emmy Awards are this Sunday.
