Last night's episodes had it all ...
It starts with a murder, as they pretty much all do and this one involves a priest. What violent crime doesn't become a little more interesting when it involves a priest? We quickly learn that this season's new guy (the reporter) has written a scathing article about priority homicide, and Pope is going to shut down the division. Brenda is crushed, and seems almost fragile. The thought of losing her team is practically unbearable for her and she struggles to deal with the investigation.
As the investigation moves forward, we see glimmers of our feisty Brenda Leigh. She's pissed. We also get a great scene with the coroner. All the coroners on this show are weird, and so far this weirdo is my favorite. I so love when he tries to flirt with Gabriel, especially since he's getting more overt, and Gabriel has finally caught on and gotten uncomfortable. Then there's the sponge ... the wipes ... how many times did Gabriel wipe himself off that day?
Loved Brenda with the priest, Brenda with her squad, and what about Brenda with Pope, Taylor and the reporter ... Hi, I'm Brenda and I'm now in charge of every criminal investigation. All shall work for me. We go from the demise of priority homicide to the rise of this major case squad - lots of new potential, and I so hope that Taylor will be working for her.
So now we get to the electronics room. I LOVE every scene the show has done in this room. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these scenes. This one was right up there. Just when you think Brenda has this guy dead to rights, we're faced with the liklihood that he will get off. This can't be. It's wrong. Brenda thinks so too ... hmmmm, what name shall I use? Mateo? Stroke of genius. The real shocker comes when she doesn't just threaten him, she does it. She's like the Captain Kirk of priority homicide. Yeah, there are rules (prime directive), but Brenda wants justice. This is the same Brenda that lectured Gabriel in "Ruby" about the need to play by the rules and not take the law into his own hands. This is strong, tough, pig-headed, complicated and brilliant Brenda. The same woman that nearly collapses earlier when she thinks her squad will be disbanded, is now willing to let a scum bag be killed because she knows he would go free otherwise. He would also kill Manuel, and the priest.
She is the most interesting woman on television.
How cute was it to see Brenda and Fritz walking in the church? I would have liked a little more Fritz in this episode. I'm so glad that they gave us this last scene in the church. The show is so good at endings, complete endings. I needed a little more and really enjoyed the scene in the confessional, when Brenda told the priest that he was safe. It probably would have been enough, though the best was yet to come. My favorite part in the whole show were those last moments when she meets Manuel ... the look on her face, the tone of her voice ... his response... it made sending the dirty investigator to prison okay for me.
This is why I love The Closer Last night’s episodes had it all … It starts with a murder, as they pretty much all do
