Travis Barker’s bandmate in (+ 44), bassist and singer Mark Hoppus, spoke with MTV.com about Barker’s continued recovery from the severe burns he suffered in a small plane crash two months ago in Columbia, South Carolina. Asked about Barker backstage at the mtvU Woodie Awards in New York on Wednesday night (November 13th), Hoppus said, “Travis is home healing, so right now we’re just totally on a break, waiting for him to heal up. I’ve been writing a bunch of stuff and getting a lot of songs together. We’ll just have to see what happens over the next few months.” Hoppus said the pair speak often and that Barker is “doing as well as anyone can under such awful circumstances.”

Hoppus, who also played with Barker in Blink-182, added that Barker can’t wait to play drums again. He said, “He’s always been one of the most musically driven people I’ve ever known in my entire life, and he’s still the same way . . . I can’t even imagine what he’s had to go through these past weeks, and he’s just trying to stay positive and get back in the studio and do good work.”

The bassist said that Barker is “healing very quickly,” although he did not say how soon work could begin on a follow-up to (+ 44) 2006 debut album, When Your Heart Stops Beating. Hoppus merely stated, “Hopefully, in the next couple months we’ll see him behind the kit, I pray. No matter what I work on, Travis will be part of, for sure.”

Barker received second and third degree burns on his hands, torso and lower body in the September 19th crash. His bodyguard and personal assistant were killed, along with the plane’s two pilots, while his friend DJ A.M. was also seriously injured.

The drummer spent nearly a month in the hospital before returning home, and has had multiple skin graft surgeries.
