SIP is an open standard that makes it possible to make voice over IP calls. Oh sure, there are other ways to do this, but SIP is the most widely deployed and used. Once you get a SIP stack and can route the audio input and output correctly, you can theoretically make and receive calls over IP.

Now that we know a SIP app can be loaded onto the iPod touch, I wonder how long before truphone, which VoIP-enabled the iPhone via a command line hack enables their SIP-based app to work on the iPod touch? Note the Asterisk PBX user-agent:

By Michael Another interesting question is whether or not the iPod Touch supports Bluetooth. Engadget seems to think that it does, and if that proves true, then you might even be able to make those VOIP calls over a wireless Bluetooth headset as well!
