Concert review: Van Morrison at the Meyerhoff
Original at Baltimore Sun
• Wed, Oct 28
The Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Van Morrison is one of popular music's great contradictions, as he proved last night during a 90-minute set at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The performance was, on several levels, bewildering.

The third plausible reason is that the occasion — a chance to see a live performance of Morrison's most cherished record, 1968's "Astral Weeks" — wasn't quite the draw that promoters had hoped. The album is generally regarded by critics as one of ...

The best live album I've ever heard. Singer and band confront audience and dominates it. There's no loud, distorted rock guitars. Just horns and strings that better Van's classic arrangements, and a band that seems to weave itself around the singer - and with no overdubs! A friggin' exc...

Also out today: Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks: Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Rock Daily was there when Morrison revived his classic eight-song 1968 LP in California last November, and on record David Fricke judges the performance at three and a half stars. Morrison accentuates the blues in th...

This one hardly needs a review, does it? But it was my first ever compact disc, and a bit of a turning point for me, towards less intense rock. Lots of nice songs here, such as “Brown Eyed Girl”, “Sweet Thing”, "Moondance", “Warm Love”, “Wild Night”, “Full Force Gale”, “Dweller on the Thresh...

By David Fricke It didn’t matter. His new album, Keep It Simple, is a strong return to the form, if not the poetry, of his early and mid-Seventies albums like Tupelo Honey, and it was a pleasure to hear him in vintage style in a small room. “Don’t go to night clubs much anymore,” he growled in one number, making a...
