Rate X-Men Legacy #217 REVIEW

The issue begins with what has become a signature of this title: Xavier being taken to school by one his former students. Wolverine forces Xavier into his mind for a trip down the uncomfortable lane of Xavier’s manipulation, all those years ago, of the new X-Men, Wolverine. I am really enjoying the segments of these comics that pull out the X-Men lore in the context of showing how Xavier wasn’t always the nice guy. Overall it’s an interesting arc and good issue within it. It isn’t just a Wolverine goes berserk type story. Also, Daken isn’t shaping up to just be another Wolverine who is younger and has a different haircut. The story has meat to its plot and is using an interesting cast of villains with varying motives. This comic is worth picking up if y...   [read the full post]

Rate Opinion: Wolverine Manifest Destiny #1

of 4 Marvel Comics Aaron, Segovia & Rauch The plot is interesting though. Something is calling Wolverine into the danger and keeping him there. We don’t have the information yet but it certainly is intriguing. Wolverine has a skeleton in his closet that seems to be more about him righting a wrong he himself committed. However, no one wants him around much less try to right the wrong. With Wolverine in so many comics it’s hard to find an interesting or original story. This story had my attention. I’m glad I picked it up. If you like Wolverine getting punished and charging into something where his motives are unclear then this comic is for you.   [read the full post]

Rate Secret Invasion #7 REVIEW

Secret Invasion #7 Marvel Comics Bendis, Yu, Morales & Martin Then we get lots of great moments right off the bat from many of the key players. Iron Man and Captain America fighting side by side, Fury and Osborn fighting next to each other guns a blazing and lots and lots of Skrulls. Some of the fun battles have Reed fighting a ton of Sues. We also get some good one on one between the Queen and Wolverine. Spider-Man, Cage and even some Hawkeye action help round out a great cast with some interesting moments. Thor kind of gets a low amount of involvement which is a bummer. We also get some Kree action to create more chaos.   [read the full post]

Rate Monster-Size Hulk #1 REVIEW

Monster-Size Hulk #1 Marvel Comics Parker, Niles, Tobin, David, Hardman, Parrillo & Williams The third story is a simple two page spread by Tobin and Williams. It’s a baby monster getting told a bedtime story by his monster parents. The story’s subject is the Hulk. It’s a fun way to show how Hulk is the creepy monster in even the ugliest of monster’s stories. I got a kick out of the some of the old Hulk villains who make a quick appearance in this short story. The artwork really captures the old version of the Hulk where purple pants and a bad haircut on a square head was the norm. This is a fun little story that is very effective.   [read the full post]

Rate X-Men Original Sin #1 REVIEW

Original at Marvel Comics Headlines external link    Sat, Oct 11

The opening of the crossover between X-Men Legacy and Wolverine Origins has an interesting set up. The comic is split between both title’s creative teams into two chapters. The story is seamless in its hand off between teams. The comic deals with reestablishing Wolverine and Xavier’s relationship and bringing Wolverine’s son, Daken, into the picture for those who might not know him. It’s a good story but it doesn’t feel terribly essential for this crossover. The story starts with Wolverine dropping Daken off at the house of one of his friends. Then he heads to see the X-Men. He wants Emma to mind wipe his son’s conditioning. What he finds is that Xavier’s scent is all over Cyclops. Wolverine goes beserk and storms off.   [read the full post]

Rate Wolverine Annual #2 REVIEW

Wolverine finds a town where the residents are missing for the most part. Those that are alive won’t speak. Wolverine then gets attacked by a sonic boom. A huge wolf-like creature appears. Wolverine scraps with it for a little while but the sonic boom took out his eardrums and in the process destroyed his balance. He eventually escapes. This comic doesn’t add anything to the Wolverine mythos and it doesn’t add anything to the regular title. However, it’s an interesting story that has its entertainment value and isn’t just another Wolverine gets revenge type story. I liked it and I found the storytelling to be very ironic and meaningful in its own context. I’m glad I picked it up. If you have room in your budget for a one shot then I would recommend this c...   [read the full post]

Rate Wolverine Origins #28 REVIEW

Original at Marvel Comics Headlines external link    Sat, Sep 27

Thumbnail

Wolverine Origins #28 Marvel Comics Way, Deodato & Beredo Daken had been trying to kill his father for a long time. Something happened to him and his healing factor was slowed down. Add in a bullet to the brain and he doesn’t remember that he hates Wolverine or that Wolverine is his father. Wolverine wants to take advantage of the situation and get him help. Xavier decides to bring him to the X-Men and in the process it kicks off some memories of his own introduction into the X-Men. The bulk of the issue is spent on his mission to confront the Hulk, which was Wolverine’s first comic appearance. The retelling of this confrontation does add some context to the bigger story of Wolverine’s origin. But again, it’s not essential.   [read the full post]

Rate Uncanny X-Men #502 REVIEW

Original at Marvel Comics Headlines external link    Sat, Sep 20    1 related articles

Thumbnail

Uncanny X-Men #502 Marvel Comics Fraction, Brubaker & Land The X-Men fight the Hellfire Club. Along the way little floating bubbles show up above the various characters to give little introductions. This is a good thing to do in a comic. This sequence gives great interaction between Wolverine and Nightcrawler. They capture a Hellfire Club member. Pixie ponders running away and has some interaction with Wolverine. Wolverine obviously has thing for taking in young X-Men girls. So while this seems like a good idea it feels a little old due to his relationships with Kitty, Jubilee, X-23 and Armor. I’m not saying it’s not okay, but I am saying it felt too familiar.   [read the full post]
