The cliffhanger from last issue was the scene where Spider-Woman was about to kill Hawkeye (his own daughter) and Logan decides to play hero. This issue barely touches on this. It left me thinking either a) this was all a ruse (which would be cool) or b) there was no further way to involve Spider-Woman without making Wolverine fight and it’s too early in the arc for that.

Mark Millar and Steve McNiven continue their awesome run on Wolverine and bring us one step closer to Hawkeye’s payday and, hopefully, answers to some of our biggest questions:

Old Man Logan continues as Hawkeye and the former X-Man continue their journey through the Kingdom of the Kingpin to New Babylon in Wolverine #69. I was psyched to get my grubby mitts on the book this week. It seems like it’s been forever since Wolverine #68 came out, and the ending of that issue left me chomping at the bit.

Logan chases away the Mole Men with the light stick. Logan calls out for Hawkeye. Hawkeye yells back that he is still strapped inside of the Spider-Buggy. Logan flips the Spider-Buggy right side up. Logan turns on the Spider-Buggy’s lights and then surveys the scene. Logan informs Hawkeye that the Mole Men ate all of the thugs that were chasing them.
Wolverine #69 ends with a great hook ending as it appears that the reader will finally find out exactly what happened to Wolverine during the great war with the next issue. Millar has spent much time; some might say too much time, in building up the mystery surrounding what happened to Wolverine during the war between the heroes and the villains. I am certainly curious to learn exactly how the villains m...

Conclusion: Logan’s narration and some decent art aren’t enough to save this bland story. This is a perfect argument for Wolverine’s over-saturation in comics. Just because an idea with him comes up doesn’t mean it needs to be published, Marvel! And clearly it doesn’t guarantee that it’l...

Wolverine Origins #29

Well I was concerned that this crossover wouldn’t have a consistent feel from title to title. I was wrong. This issue very much resembles the storytelling from Legacy. It’s an excellent issue and makes use of the techniques that have worked so well in the Legacy title the last few months. I have hope for this arc and the best part about it is I have no idea, not even a guess, as to how it will end. Read more »

The issue begins with what has become a signature of this title: Xavier being taken to school by one his former students. Wolverine forces Xavier into his mind for a trip down the uncomfortable lane of Xavier’s manipulation, all those years ago, of the new X-Men, Wolverine. I am really enjoying the segments of these comics that pull out the X-Men lore in the context of showing how Xavier wasn’t always the nice guy.

Overall it’s an interesting arc and good issue within it. It isn’t just a Wolverine goes berserk type story. Also, Daken isn’t shaping up to just be another Wolverine who is younger and has a different haircut. The story has meat to its plot and is using an interesting cast of villains with varying motives. This comic is worth picking up if y...

X-Men Original Sin #1 REVIEW

The opening of the crossover between X-Men Legacy and Wolverine Origins has an interesting set up. The comic is split between both title’s creative teams into two chapters. The story is seamless in its hand off between teams. The comic deals with reestablishing Wolverine and Xavier’s relationship and bringing Wolverine’s son, Daken, into the picture for those who might not know him. It’s a good story but it doesn’t feel terribly essential for this crossover.

The story starts with Wolverine dropping Daken off at the house of one of his friends. Then he heads to see the X-Men. He wants Emma to mind wipe his son’s conditioning. What he finds is that Xavier’s scent is all over Cyclops. Wolverine goes beserk and storms off.

Wolverine finds a town where the residents are missing for the most part. Those that are alive won’t speak. Wolverine then gets attacked by a sonic boom. A huge wolf-like creature appears. Wolverine scraps with it for a little while but the sonic boom took out his eardrums and in the process destroyed his balance. He eventually escapes.

This comic doesn’t add anything to the Wolverine mythos and it doesn’t add anything to the regular title. However, it’s an interesting story that has its entertainment value and isn’t just another Wolverine gets revenge type story. I liked it and I found the storytelling to be very ironic and meaningful in its own context. I’m glad I picked it up. If you have room in your budget for a one shot then I would recommend this c...

Logan and Hawkeye hop out of the Spider-Buggy and go investigating to see if there are any survivors. There are none. They are all dead. Hawkeye says that he isn’t worried since he has the big bad Wolverine with him. Logan reminds Hawkeye that his name is “Logan” and not “Wolverine.” Once again, Hawkeye rebuffs Logan and states that Logan’s wife and kids are back in Sacramento and that Logan does not need to pretend anymore.

The Ghost Riders quickly take out Hawkeye and then quickly move on to Logan. The Ghost Riders viciously beat Logan. Logan refuses to fight back. Logan spits that he refuses to hurt another living soul. Logan says that he will not strike back. The Ghost Riders continue to beat the snot out of Wolverine.

Miss Banner refers to Logan as “Wolverine.” Logan answers that she can call him “Logan.” Miss Banner snipes that she forgot that Wolverine “died” the night the bad guys beat their asses. Miss Banner then introduces Logan to her brothers Otis and Charlie.

Comments
The Good: Wolverine #66 was an absolute blast to read. Millar did a fantastic job quickly hooking me with this debut issue of his story arc “Old Man Logan.” I have always found it clear that the source material for Wolverine was the Man With No Name. Logan has always come across as Marvel’s mutant Man With No Name. All the cartoon versions of Wolverine even sport that trademark Eastwood sounding voice.

If you’re expecting a huge, fast-paced romp like Mark Millar’s “Enemy of the State” storyline (which is probably the last great Wolverine story I’ve read), you’re going to be disappointed. This is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Wolverine is a man who’s made peace with himsel...

Overall, I can’t help but feel that this X-Force special will only satisfy certain types of people. Wolverine and Warpath fans will get a decent enough fix and those looking for some comic book carnage will find themselves satisfied with the mass bloodletting in the Wolverine story, but a...

Jason Aaron, however, is the bigger problem. Much like Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost (the writers of X-Force), Aaron's portrayal of Wolverine is just awful. Wolverine continues to trot around Asia and Africa on the heels of Mystique only to be fooled and foiled time and time again. There'...

Synopsis: We begin with Wolverine walking into the Ultimates’ mansion. Wolverine says he is here because the X-Men make Magneto their business. And that the Brotherhood is connected to Magneto. Hawkeye asks Wolverine “Didn’t you used to be in the Brotherhood?” Wolverine spits back “Didn’t you used to have a wife and two kids.” Hawkeye calls Wolverine a “mutie” and says it is on. Hawkeye unloads a crapload of bullets into Wolverine. Wolverine shrugs them off and puts his claws to Hawkeye’s head. Hawkeye tells Wolverine to go ahead and kill him. Hawkeye mumbles that he is better off dead.

Magneto charged Wolverine with the task of killing his pathetically weak son, Quicksilver, in order for Wolverine to prove his loyalty to Magneto.

We cut to the present day with Wolverine arriving at a small village in Afghanistan. Wolverine threatens to gut a little boy unless he tells Wolverine where Mystique is hiding. Wolverine says that he can smell her scent all over the village. Wolverine suddenly drops the boy and grabs a nearby woman. Wolverine tells Mystique to drop her disguise and show the villagers who she truly is.

We zip back to the present. Wolverine arrives at the small village in Afghanistan from the beginning of the issue. We see Mystique in Wolverine form hiding in an alley. Wolverine sees the dead woman that the Mystique posing as Wolverine killed. Wolverine yells out for Mystique to come out of hiding. The villagers all appear on the scene with plenty of guns and tell Wolver...

Loeb supplies Wolverine #53 with solid dialogue. I like how Loeb handles Wolverine’s character. Wolverine has the proper external voice and he acts and reacts in the standard fashion that his character should. Loeb definitely has a better feel for Logan’s personality than Daniel Way over in Wolverine: Origins.

And honestly, Wolverine’s past was irrelevant. Just about every Marvel hero has an origin and back-story. Not Wolverine. And that is what made him so unique. I always found it wild and bold that Marvel never gave Wolverine a real name or an origin. And that is what made Wolverine so special and cool.

I like how Loeb handles Wolverine’s character. Loeb serves up a proper sounding external voice for Wolverine. Loeb gives a Wolverine that isn’t too over the top and vanilla in personality like what Way gives us on Wolverine: Origins. Loeb goes with a version of Wolverine much more like how Claremont used to write him.

The Bad: Wolverine #52 was just a pedestrian issue. Loeb has failed to hook me on this story arc. Now, part of why I haven’t gotten into this story arc is that I have a philosophical difference with Marvel Comics on the direction for Wolverine’s character. I maintain that it is a massive mistake to give Wolverine his memories back.

Hugh Jackman voices a mouse named Roddy who spends a brief period of time entertaining the possibility of a Wolverine costume.
