X-Men Magneto Testament #2 REVIEW

X-Men Magneto Testament #2 of 5 Marvel Comics Pak, Di Giandomenico & Hollingsworth This is a story that is not a superhero tale. It’s not an origins story. It’s not anything like any other X-Men story I’ve ever read. It’s a historical account of how Nazi Germany turned its own citizens into the enemy. It took everything they had, beating them along the way, before running them out of their homes and eventually taking their lives. It follows one family in particular. A member of that family happens to become Magneto. Without that last sentence, this comic has nothing to do with the X-Men. It’s an excellent story documenting a horrifying and dark spot on mankind’s history. It’s a powerful story. [read the full post]

Wolverine Origins #28 REVIEW

Wolverine Origins #28 Marvel Comics Way, Deodato & Beredo Daken had been trying to kill his father for a long time. Something happened to him and his healing factor was slowed down. Add in a bullet to the brain and he doesn’t remember that he hates Wolverine or that Wolverine is his father. Wolverine wants to take advantage of the situation and get him help. Xavier decides to bring him to the X-Men and in the process it kicks off some memories of his own introduction into the X-Men. The bulk of the issue is spent on his mission to confront the Hulk, which was Wolverine’s first comic appearance. The retelling of this confrontation does add some context to the bigger story of Wolverine’s origin. But again, it’s not essential. [read the full post]

Uncanny X-Men #502 Marvel Comics Fraction, Brubaker & Land The X-Men fight the Hellfire Club. Along the way little floating bubbles show up above the various characters to give little introductions. This is a good thing to do in a comic. This sequence gives great interaction between Wolverine and Nightcrawler. They capture a Hellfire Club member. Pixie ponders running away and has some interaction with Wolverine. Wolverine obviously has thing for taking in young X-Men girls. So while this seems like a good idea it feels a little old due to his relationships with Kitty, Jubilee, X-23 and Armor. I’m not saying it’s not okay, but I am saying it felt too familiar. Secret Invasion X-Men #2 REVIEW
Original at Marvel Comics Headlines
• Mon, Sep 15
Secret Invasion X-Men #2 of 4 Marvel Comics Carey & Nord Well, the X-Men appear to be able to handle the Skrulls and even the Super Skrulls so what’s left? Well this issue doesn’t exactly show us how the Skrulls are prepared to deal with the X-Men, but there are a couple of interesting plot turns that can probably make this thing interesting. Otherwise I’d say this is a rout. The Skrulls lay out their next step, which is to trap the X-Men into coming to them. Almost on queue we see Cyclops explaining the X-Men’s plan to the mutants. The big obstacle with the pending battle is that the Skrulls are blocking telepaths. [read the full post]

Uncanny X-Men #501 Marvel Comics Brubaker, Fraction & Land Then we have some bonding between Cyclops and Angel. This kind of dragged on a little too long, but I guess the character interaction was pretty decent all things considered. This is immediately followed up with more downtime between Cyclops, Beast and Wolverine. It got boring real fast. Uncanny X-Men #501 Another negative was the artwork. Overall, it was fine. However, I found that many of the scenes lacked a background. For example, Colossus, Wolverine and Nightcrawler interaction all appeared to take place in a prison cell or in a void. I just felt like the story could have been really enhanced by the artwork and it wasn’t. [read the full post]

Marvel Comics Carey & Eaton Back in the present, Gambit gets into trouble and is bailed out by Sebastian Shaw, who is also on the hit list. While this is going on, Sinister takes Xavier on a tour of all his bad “daddy” mistakes with Cyclops and his X-Men. He pretty much makes Xavier look like a real failure. Xavier is taken captive while he is fighting in his mind with Sinister. Gambit and Shaw pursue. Shaw explains much of the plot to Gambit. Basically Sinister prepared for his death by finding a way to infuse his mind into someone else’s body. He picked a few mutants for this. Shaw and Xavier are among them. Basically Sinister is going to assume Xavier’s body. But there is a twist in this issue. [read the full post]

Marvel Comics Carey, Eaton & Deodato Gambit reveals a list of names up for whacking that Xavier’s name is on. Immediately you have to wonder what Gambit’s agenda is. All of the names on the list have had some role, minor or not, in this series so far, making this a plot tying moment. So what is this issue missing? Well, for one thing, we get no information on the current day Gambit. What has he been doing since Messiah Complex? Why did Xavier’s mind probe stop after a certain time period? This issue has minor flaws that make the story feel a little bit odd in some spots. These are the kinds of complaints that might get flushed away with subsequent issues. [read the full post]

Cable #4
Original at Marvel Comics Headlines
• Sat, Jun 7
Marvel Comics Swierczynski & Olivetti The issue begins with Cannonball and Cable meeting up. Cannonball is an old man. He is the only mutant left. There are a ton of obvious questions, but Cable only wants to know how he found them. After all the mutants telepaths died, “they” figured out how to use the cerebra. Once all the other mutants where dead Cannonball would keep checking it waiting for Cable to show up. Interesting plan, except his rehash of using the Cerebra on that day when he found Cable only showed two mutants. There are actually three: Cable, Bishop and the baby. This series has had trouble counting (remember the bullet count from last issue?). [read the full post]
X-Men Divided We Stand #2

Next up is Forge. This one could have been interesting except it spends much too much time telling us about Bishop and the flashback of Bishop stealing an arm and a time machine. I would argue that you already know this if you follow the Cable series or it isn’t relevant because you aren’t following the Cable series. Otherwise I would say this story is more about Bishop than about Forge. The artwork was a mixed bag for me. It was so detailed when showing Forge’s brain and yet, when showing Bishop’s burned stump, it looks more like a brain than Forge’s actual brain! This story just didn’t fly with me. I’m not even sure if this story was in character for Forge. 2 out of 5 geek goggles X-Men Divided We Stand #1 (of 2) of 2) [read the full post]
X-Men Legacy #210

Xavier and Exodus face off in a battle of minds. This is odd because Xavier’s mind wasn’t fully rebuilt, but I guess it still works. Magneto tries to help Xavier, but cant. So that means Exodus saved Xavier and is now battling him. Exodus brought in Magneto and is now battling him. Okay. Exodus has Xavier on his knees. Then the issue takes a turn that reminds me of what I haven’t liked all along. Emma feels Xavier fighting for his life. Eventually Xavier stops Exodus and Exodus reveals that he wants Xavier to lead the Acolytes. This I can accept. What I can’t accept is that Xavier walks out of there without getting any flack from Exodus. So does Magneto and others. Exodus just stands there like a statue. This makes no sense. Add in that mutants who were in mix in prev... [read the full post]
Opinion: Geek Goggle Weekly Rankings For 04/30/08

• Fri, May 2
Here are this week's comics ranked both prior to purchase and then after one reading. 6) Caliber #1 (-) 5) X-Men Legacy #210 (1) This issue disappointed me on a lot of levels. Basically you have a comic with Exodus, Xavier and Magneto and nothing significant happens. Xavier has selective memory, which makes things impossible to know what he knows or doesn't know. Exodus lets him walk out with Magneto who he was trying to kill last issue. Add in that mutants are unaccounted for that had been in the fray and you have a bit of a mess. And as stated all over the place: why aren't the X-Men concerned that Xavier's body disappeared from under their noses. This issue was a letdown. [read the full post]

X-Men: Divided We Stand #1 of 2 Marvel Comics Carey, Peterson, Ponsor, Kyle, Yost, Takeda, Young, Beaulieu, Yost, LaFuente, Fraction & McKelvie Lastly, Nightcrawler confronts the one who nearly killed him, Scalphunter. This story is good for a couple of reasons. One, it really gives deep insight into Nightcrawler’s character. We even get the aspects of his spirituality which isn’t always presented with the character. Secondly, we see that not all the X-Men are lost in their purpose. Lastly, we see that the villains of the Messiah Complex aren’t exactly prospering since the war ended either. 4 out of 5 geek goggles. X-Men Divided We Stand #1 (of 2) [read the full post]
