I was beginning to think that Marvel was never going to get around to addressing the fallout from the Messiah Complex here in the pages of Uncanny X-Men. Uncanny X-Men #504 suffers from the same defects and weaknesses that this title has suffered from since Fraction came aboard on Uncanny X-Men #500. Uncanny X-Men #504 was yet another set-up issue. It seems that all we have gotten on this title since issue #500 has been nothing but set-up. Fraction continues this trend by laying the foundation for the Madelyn Pryor plotline, the Colossus plotline and the Purifiers plotline.   [read the full post]

This isn't good news. 20th Century Fox has chosen Josh Schwartz, the creator behind The O.C. and Gossip Girl, to write and possibily direct "X-Men: First Class." Marvel needs to get the X-Men franchise back from Fox before they kill it.

The issue begins with what has become a signature of this title: Xavier being taken to school by one his former students. Wolverine forces Xavier into his mind for a trip down the uncomfortable lane of Xavier’s manipulation, all those years ago, of the new X-Men, Wolverine. I am really enjoying the segments of these comics that pull out the X-Men lore in the context of showing how Xavier wasn’t always the nice guy. Overall it’s an interesting arc and good issue within it. It isn’t just a Wolverine goes berserk type story. Also, Daken isn’t shaping up to just be another Wolverine who is younger and has a different haircut. The story has meat to its plot and is using an interesting cast of villains with varying motives. Uncanny X-Men #503 Marvel Comics Fraction, Brubaker, Land and Ponsor Next the issue covers Empath and his rampage. While Scott and Emma play the dual role of tactician and communications center, Angel, Storm, Nightcrawler and Wolverine try to stop Empath. While this is going on Pixie has herself a breakout moment and some good interaction with Beast to boot. It’s a good issue. There is a decent sized cast and the issue moves fast enough so that none of them really eat up too much scenery. The banter between Nightcrawler and Wolverine is assuming while the dialogue between Cannonball, Karma and Mirage is meaningful. Their first mission was to hunt down former members of the New Mutants who were recreating the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Wolf Cub died. "Cyclops" turned out to be Donald Pierce, a longtime enemy of the X-Men. Now the team has joined the real X-Men. In the present...Pierce is saying that it is an awful thing being a mutant. X-Men Legacy #216 Marvel Comics Carey, Briones & Hanna Emma shows Xavier his first meeting with Beast. This is very much like the Origin issue from a couple of weeks ago and it helps nail down just how manipulative Xavier is and how he likes to jump into other people’s minds without asking but hates it when people do that to him. Emma shows Xavier how badly he twisted up Rogue. This helps to show Xavier has a tough side, especially when he is lying. Some father figure he makes. Next she deals with his treatment of Cyclops. Then Jean and finally Moira. It’s quite a tour and Xavier doesn’t always come out looking too rosy. Uncanny X-Men #502 Marvel Comics Fraction, Brubaker & Land The X-Men fight the Hellfire Club. Along the way little floating bubbles show up above the various characters to give little introductions. This is a good thing to do in a comic. This sequence gives great interaction between Wolverine and Nightcrawler. They capture a Hellfire Club member. Pixie ponders running away and has some interaction with Wolverine. Wolverine obviously has thing for taking in young X-Men girls. So while this seems like a good idea it feels a little old due to his relationships with Kitty, Jubilee, X-23 and Armor. I’m not saying it’s not okay, but I am saying it felt too familiar.   [read the full post]

Secret Invasion X-Men #2 of 4 Marvel Comics Carey & Nord Well, the X-Men appear to be able to handle the Skrulls and even the Super Skrulls so what’s left? Well this issue doesn’t exactly show us how the Skrulls are prepared to deal with the X-Men, but there are a couple of interesting plot turns that can probably make this thing interesting. X-Men: Divided We Stand #1 of 2 Marvel Comics Carey, Peterson, Ponsor, Kyle, Yost, Takeda, Young, Beaulieu, Yost, LaFuente, Fraction & McKelvie Lastly, Nightcrawler confronts the one who nearly killed him, Scalphunter. This story is good for a couple of reasons. One, it really gives deep insight into Nightcrawler’s character. We even get the aspects of his spirituality which isn’t always presented with the character. Secondly, we see that not all the X-Men are lost in their purpose. The two men start drinking as Colossus gets all depressed about his departed family and all the various traumatic events that he has endured as an X-Man. Particularly fresh on his mind is his loss of Kitty Pryde. Wolverine tells Colossus that he shouldn’t keep his emotions bottled up and that he should talk to them about Kitty. Wolverine then orders more drinks. We shift back to the bar in Russia where a bunch of gangster walk in and demand money from the bartender. By cslepage X-Men Legacy #208 Marvel Comics Carey, Eaton & Romita Xavier was shot in the head at the conclusion of the Messiah Complex. Apparently, he was abducted in the fray. This has some continuity problems. For one, didn’t everyone mention how Beast was with him or tending to him? Also, in both X-Force and Wolverine, Cyclops dispatches Wolverine to take care of way lesser important matters than finding Xavier. Plus, in Uncanny X-Men there isn’t any mention of the missing Xavier while Cyclops and Emma vacation. Rogue mentions that when she was healed from the Strain 88, that all the minds she had absorbed over the years were also erased. That it was just Rogue. For about a minute. That now it is Rogue and Mystique in her head. Rogue says that she wish she had seen this sooner because then she never would have touched Mystique. Rogue then says that Mystique is the last person she ever wants to see and now Mystique is stuck in her head. Rogue then says that she needs to go away and be by herself and think. Rogue then leaves. Cable then teleports from the scene. As Cable is teleporting away, Bishop wakes up and screams “NO!” and fires several shots at Cable’s disappearing form. Professor X says that Storm’s mind suddenly went white and that he can’t get into her mind now. That all he hears is screaming. Beast and Bishop leave the dealer’s place. Beast is depressed that he has hit a total dead end. That he doesn’t know where to go from here. Bishop says he isn’t worried because in his future there are tons of mutants. Beast then comments that Bishop is from an alternate future like Marvel Girl and Cable. That Bishop’s very presence here makes it unlikely that it will ever…Beast pauses and then says “Wait. By Rokk Krinn And what is up with Carey’s Colossus? Colossus acts like he is from outer space rather than from Russia. Colossus isn’t a Vulcan. And Colossus didn’t just get off the boat. He has been in America for quite some time. It is striking the difference of Whedon’s well developed Colossus and Carey’s one-dimensional dumb Colossus who acts like he just arrived on planet Earth from planet Vulcan. Overall: There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Carey’s X-Men is the weakest of all the X-titles that Marvel publishes. David’s X-Factor is the best with some of the best character work, dialogue and subtle plotlines currently on the market. By Rokk Krinn Darwin then informs Nightcrawler that the M’Kraan Crystal gave Professor X his mutant powers back. Professor X comments that they must make contact with Alex and the others immediately. I dig that Polaris is standing by her man. For me, Havok and Polaris go together like peanut butter and jelly. I didn’t really get into it when they were broken up and Polaris was paired up with Iceman. It just didn’t work for me. These two characters belong together and it is cool to see Polaris willing to sacrifice her life in order to support Havok. Nightcrawler teleports over to Professor X. However, Vulcan blasts Nighcrawler and then grabs Professor X. Vulcan then says that Professor X is going to get what he deserves. I’m going to guess that Darwin will sacrifice his own life in order to save Professor X. And I think there might be a good chance that Professor X’s exposure to the Crystal may give him his mutant powers back.
