By Geoff Klock(geoff.klock@gmail.com) Thus, this issue and the next comprise an opening one-two punch in Claremont’s attempt to get his characters out of the pressure-cooker and let them live, and breathe. By Jim(noreply@blogger.com) Magneto has appeared over Utopia. Professor X asks him what he wants. Magneto does not want to speak to him, he is there to talk to Scott (Cyclops) Summers. As a sign that he is not looking for a fight, Magneto removes his helmet that protects him from psychic attacks. He gives his helmet to Scott. Professor X confronts him that it is a trap. Magneto refuses to fight. He says that Professor X and his time has passed. Professor launches a psychic attack. Magneto holds his ground but does not respond. The professor and Scott have an argument. Scott tells him to stand down. It is very understandable that Professor X would not trust Magneto. They have known each other for years and it always seems like Magneto has opposed him at every turn. No matter how many times he... [read the full post]

By noreply@blogger.com (Jim) This comic book has disappointed the Revolution. X-Men has traditionally been about the characters that we have read about for years. Claremont built up their personalities to the point that they seem like real people. Then when they are thrown into battles in the Savage Land, against giant robots, and fight superteams from other countries(or worlds), we care what happens to them. Into all the traditional comic storylines, Claremont added some very serious issues. The Beast approaches Angel. He wants to know why Angel is keeping secrets from him. Angel says he can't tell him. Angel flies away. As the process begins, the machine explodes. The High Evolutionary cries "Erik". The man comes out of the wreckage and says "No. Magneto..." [read the full post]

By ComicList X-Men Magneto Testament #2 of 5 Marvel Comics Pak, Di Giandomenico & Hollingsworth This is a story that is not a superhero tale. It’s not an origins story. It’s not anything like any other X-Men story I’ve ever read. It’s a historical account of how Nazi Germany turned its own citizens into the enemy. It took everything they had, beating them along the way, before running them out of their homes and eventually taking their lives. It follows one family in particular. A member of that family happens to become Magneto. Without that last sentence, this comic has nothing to do with the X-Men. It’s an excellent story documenting a horrifying and dark spot on mankind’s history. It’s a powerful story. [read the full post]

X-Men Legacy #216 Marvel Comics Carey, Briones & Hanna Emma shows Xavier his first meeting with Beast. This is very much like the Origin issue from a couple of weeks ago and it helps nail down just how manipulative Xavier is and how he likes to jump into other people’s minds without asking but hates it when people do that to him. Emma shows Xavier how badly he twisted up Rogue. This helps to show Xavier has a tough side, especially when he is lying. Some father figure he makes. Next she deals with his treatment of Cyclops. Then Jean and finally Moira. It’s quite a tour and Xavier doesn’t always come out looking too rosy. In fact, someone should have decked the dude despite the wheelchair decades ago. Uncanny X-Men #502 Marvel Comics Fraction, Brubaker & Land The X-Men fight the Hellfire Club. Along the way little floating bubbles show up above the various characters to give little introductions. This is a good thing to do in a comic. This sequence gives great interaction between Wolverine and Nightcrawler. They capture a Hellfire Club member. Pixie ponders running away and has some interaction with Wolverine. Wolverine obviously has thing for taking in young X-Men girls. To be sure we get plenty of cheesy dialogue during this fight that would fit in perfectly in a 1980’s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Cyclops reminds Nightcrawler and Wolverine to bring back one of the thugs so they can question him. The last remaining Hellfire gang member left standing predictably pees his pants at the sight of Wolverine and Nightcrawler. (Oh, I have so never seen this in a comic book before. Secret Invasion X-Men #2 of 4 Marvel Comics Carey & Nord Well, the X-Men appear to be able to handle the Skrulls and even the Super Skrulls so what’s left? Well this issue doesn’t exactly show us how the Skrulls are prepared to deal with the X-Men, but there are a couple of interesting plot turns that can probably make this thing interesting. Otherwise I’d say this is a rout. The Skrulls lay out their next step, which is to trap the X-Men into coming to them. Almost on queue we see Cyclops explaining the X-Men’s plan to the mutants. The big obstacle with the pending battle is that the Skrulls are blocking telepaths. [read the full post]
